PM Browne Says He Can’t See UPP Winning Another Election
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has expressed confidence in the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s political future, declaring that he does not foresee the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) winning any upcoming elections.
Speaking during his weekly Browne and Browne programme on Pointe FM, Browne said the Labour Party’s momentum and organisational strength make it the dominant force in Antiguan politics.
“I can’t see the UPP winning another election—certainly not the following election or the upcoming election for that matter,” Browne said.
The Prime Minister pointed to growing support from young people and the party’s ability to attract new talent as key factors in what he described as a political “renaissance.”
“The movement of young people in particular coming towards the Labour Party—I’ve been in the Labour Party for 25 years, I’ve never seen that kind of movement,” he said.
According to Browne, the ABLP has emerged stronger since the January 2023 general election, despite holding a slimmer parliamentary majority. He credited this resurgence to bold governance and public confidence in the party’s leadership.
“There were just astonished that despite the fact that the Labour Party was significantly weakened after the January 23 elections, that we acted as though we had practically all the seats,” he said. “We’re not afraid of the UPP.”
Browne added that the ABLP’s willingness to make difficult policy decisions—such as increasing the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax to 17%—demonstrates its commitment to responsible governance.
“We weren’t worried that we had a one-seat majority and maybe they’d be able to topple us, because we knew it was the right thing to do—to make sure we can pay public servants in time, to make sure we can cover government’s obligations.”
He also contrasted the ABLP’s unity with what he described as internal discord in the opposition.
“The party is united, unlike the UPP that is imploded,” Browne said.
Browne signalled that the ABLP is preparing to retain power well beyond the current term. “The Labour Party is the party of choice… It doesn’t matter who they supported before, they feel very comfortable making that transition into the Antigua Labour Party,” he said.

He should be aware though, that there is a slow movement away from party politics.
How soon we forget!!! Last cycle 4 votes made a difference. A few people went to the bathroom for a change of underwear.
The guy has to be crazy. He wasn’t worried about having a one-seat majority but he immediately went on a purchasing spree into the UPP and he meticulously targeted the deceitful ones; those who would support his actions in matters like the Alfa Nero. He’s now being frivolous and nonchalant about the issue to the extent that he was mockingly offering portions of his purported EC$ 27mil to his water carriers but his focus might be in the wrong place. He should know that the US $673,000 all cash that found itself on American soil to purchase a property, is the real deal and he seems willing to sacrifice his ‘businessman’ son to save his skin. This, for sure, is going to have a result.
Gaston you are right that you can’t see UPP winning another election, because under your proxy leader Jamal Pringle there is no threat, if they change the UPP leadership you will pi$$ in your pants, because hadeed doesn’t control all the the UPP parliamentarians, but he has Pringle in his pocket, don’t worry karl Marx always say the people will find a way, just like 1974 and 2004.
And quite frankly, neither can I.
This is very the self-sabotaging nature of the current oppostition makes them a paltry alternative for the current administration. They have abandoned the whole concept of people first and are completely focused on airing their dirty laundry.
Mr PM, the great VC Bird stayed in Power for a very long time and you can’t move until Peace finish College this is serious stuff so please stay for at least another two terms don’t let them bring suffering to our Nation
Careful Gaston, yall barely won this one so thread lightly. Antigua going back to slavery days. Syrians run this country now poor people feeling it the hardest and the worst part is the people and them too dunce to see.
The ABLP will not beat the UPP in the next election if it happens it will be the UPP that defeats itself
@ Loveme
Don’t forget they did not win the election in 2023 either because out of his mouth came the truth that he had transferred voters to help his colleagues win their seats in other constituencies.
ABLP is an illegitimate government. They never won. DO NOT FORGET THAT.
