Prime Minister Gaston Browne has rejected opposition claims that his government entered into a secret agreement with the United States to accept large numbers of deportees, describing the allegations as false and politically motivated.
His full statement is below:
The UPP criminal elements and propagandists have accused my government of signing a secret agreement, to accept over 100K, criminal deportees from the US.
This is a dastardly political spin, mired in lies and disinformation, designed to score cheap political points.
We agreed to accept, possibly up to ten, non criminal refugees, who may have skills that are in short demand locally.
This is a goodwill agreement in which we will maintain the full discretion, to accept or reject any recommended person.
The US has agreed to assist in providing biometric details and any information of criminal conduct.
The government of the United States has invited over 100 countries to assist in reducing the burden on the US, by accepting some of their refugees/deportees.
We have agreed to participate, limiting our intake to a maximum of ten individuals with skills and no criminal record.
Several countries, including Caricom countered have signed off on the agreement.
The UPP as usual, always opportunistically seeking to promote lies and sensationalism to garner public support.

With the hundreds of thousands of refugees the US wants to dispose of there was no talk of ten. Similarly please show us documents to substantiate. You also said several other Caricom countries have agreed please name them. You need a new mandate with all that is going on. Call the election or resign now and let Chet lead. The United States has territories in the Caribbean namely the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and even Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, why not send them there? The negatives of this decision far outweigh any benefit that we can get from entertaining any refugees here on Antigua and Barbuda. What other Caribbean island or islands have also accepted refugees from the US? I do not see non support of this issue as being a partisan political issue. I see this as a bad decision which publicly and privately most Antiguans and Barbudans oppose.
Show the evidence of the agreement and show where anyone said 100k persons to be accepted. You are the spin doctor . Antiguans and Barbudans are fed up .

100 countries have signed on to assist their friend, the USA, a country with more illegals than any other. And illegal does not mean they are criminals. There are thousands of Antiguans who are illegally in the USA, working and living decent lives.
