PM Browne receives award as Champion against Sea Level Rise at COP28 in Dubai

DUBAI, UAE – 3rd December, 2023…One of the most urgent and pressing issues confronting island nations was the subject of discussions of a high level panel that was addressed by Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne as he continued a wide-ranging round of engagements at COP28 now underway in Dubai.

On a day filled with a round of meetings on Saturday Prime Minister Browne was invited to address a major side event whose central theme was the thought-provoking issue of Protecting Statehood,

Sovereignty & Heritage amidst the Climate Crisis (Coalition on Sea-Level Rise).

Among the top officials on the panel were President of the United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis, Prime Minister of Tuvalu Kausea Natano and former President of Costa Rica and Special Envoy of the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), Carlos Alvarado Quesada.

With global temperatures climbing, sea level rise is a near and pressing danger that threatens to erase the coastlines of small island states, many of whose economies are dependent on the natural resources of the ocean and coastal areas to support the livelihoods of their people.

As the clock ticks, we stand at a critical juncture. The consequences of the actions of developed countries are manifesting in the rising tide, but the power to change course rests with us,” Prime Minister Browne told the room of experts and partners involved in the effort to stave off sea level rise.

“Reflect on the interconnectedness of our world, where the melting ice caps, and warming oceans reverberate across continents, forcing entire communities to move. This is just not a SIDS issue; this is a global challenge that demands a global response,” Prime Minister Browne pleaded.

“In this pivotal moment, let us recognize that the preservation of our world requires collaboration that transcends borders. We must forge alliances, set aside differences, and stand together as stewards of a fragile Earth,” he added.

For his tremendous courage and inspiration on this issue, Prime Minister Browne received an award to tremendous applause from the Global Centre of Mobility for being a Champion on Sea Level Rise. Presenting the award Climate Envoy of the President of the United Nations General Assembly and Managing Director of the Global Centre for Climate Mobility, Kamal Amakrane.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Browne showed immense leadership in helping to lead the charge of the Commission of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law (COSIS) in its quest for climate justice.

On this effort, he told the event: “We must be united in our responsibility to act on environmental matters as it pertains to protecting our seas.”

“We must accelerate efforts to mitigate climate change, transitioning to sustainable practices and embracing renewable energy sources. Simultaneously, we must adapt to the inevitable changes already set in motion, fortifying vulnerable communities and ecosystems,” the Antigua and Barbuda leader urged.

  1. Imagine that, the word “sea”, a very large large body of “water” that surrounds earth’s land masses and the people of his very small country cannot get any water to bathe.

    • Again Sidey, didn’t you REALLY mean to say:

“Whom ‘Gaston’ Bless No man can curse?

@ From The Sideline you out and out Gastonite, don’t forget to choose your words carefully, least you draw UNPLEASANT or UNWANTED attention to yourself.

Remember, cock 🐓 mout’ kill cock 🐓

    • You’re just so stupid; all the attendees from Small Island Developing States were presented that award for participating. You finally found something to cheer about although it was all nonsensical. Your boss is the greatest violator of and threat to the protocol.

    • Sideline when he speaks does he think about what is happening in Barbuda? I suggest he takes up a permanent position with COSiS or one of these organizations and leave Antigua to be governed by other people. He likes being on the world stage. He can then be the chief fundraiser for Antigua by shaking down rich countries and individuals.

  2. The headline should say that PM Browne received the award on behalf of Antigua and Barbuda 🇦🇬We hired him so anything he received is on behalf of us the people.

    • Fair enough. And all the cussing he gets from the idiots here is also on behalf of Antigua and Barbuda.

    • Here here, and well said @ My 2 Sense; and let’s see If Gassssston backs up his words with “climate change” actions when he returns home – mind you, we already know … ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!

  3. what has he actually done in this regard, apart from contribute more how air to the atmosphere? Isn’t he the one who has approved all sorts of destructive developments to the local environment and made himself rich in the process? What has happened to the mangrove areas, a key component in preventing environmental degradation? I guess this just shows what all of these awards are really worth.

    • @Arnold – The plastuc bag aand styrofoam ban. You may recall we were one of the first nations to do such. Our move to atleast less dirty fuel options for energy generaytion (L&G plant). The push for Barbuda to use Green energy. Lets not forget Green Fins Programme and the Tobacco Control Act

Congrats as usual the PM for as usual making big moves that the opposition is so busy trying not to see that they keep tripping.

  4. Sideline trying to uphold the honor of this failed, messy government is just laughable.

Incase you haven’t noticed @sideline, Antigua is in a mess, the moral fiber of the country is in a dump heap, the youths are lost, commiting crimes with impunity, and here you are praising this man for a bloody award.
This man has 4 more years to clean up Antigua, I’ll give him a big award if he manages to do so. 🤣 😂.

    • No wonder Antigua has the lowest crime rate in the region. But the chicken littles that you guys are, always see the sky falling.

      • And you NEVER see no wrong with Gassssston’s governance of our beautiful country.

  5. That what am talking about, monetizing the environment, nowhere rich countries pay politicians to turn a blind eye while their white citizens destroy our environment for their enrichment, it’s full scale destruction ahead for our environment already bought, police brutality will increase against citizens who protest environmental damages, colonization of the environment, watch how these investors will have their cake and eat it.
