PM Browne Praises China as “True Friend” and Most “Benevolent” Nation

Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed profound gratitude to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Booby Alley Housing Project, a $100 million development aimed at providing 150 condominium homes to Antiguan families. The project, funded entirely through a grant from China, marks a significant milestone in Antigua and Barbuda’s partnership with the Asian superpower.

In his remarks, Browne emphasized the unique support Antigua and Barbuda has received from China, calling the PRC “one of the most benevolent countries in the entire world” and “a true friend” to the people of Antigua and Barbuda. “I just want to thank the PRC for this very generous gift of 150 condominium homes,” Browne said, noting that the total grant is valued at around $100 million.

The Prime Minister highlighted that few countries would offer such extensive financial aid. “There are many countries that are far wealthier than China, even in this hemisphere. We couldn’t have gone to them to ask for $10 million, much less $100 million,” he noted. Browne described China’s assistance as a testament to its commitment to “shared prosperity globally,” praising the PRC for its responsive approach to addressing local needs.

Browne also acknowledged Antigua and Barbuda’s involvement in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, a global development framework that Antigua and Barbuda was the first Caribbean nation to join. “We’re very pleased that China has been so responsive to the needs of our people,” Browne added, underscoring the alignment between the two nations’ vision for economic and social development.

Addressing the geopolitical dynamics, Browne advocated for global collaboration over confrontation, urging world powers like China and the United States to work together for mutual benefit. “Generally speaking, we don’t get into geopolitical issues; we’re just too small,” he stated. “When the elephants are fighting, we don’t want to get trampled like the grass.”

He continued, “We believe as a small nation that we can be honest brokers, calling upon China, the United States, and others to continue to collaborate. China has no interest in warring with anyone; clearly, they’ll defend their interests, but we hope for a reduction in this aggression within the geopolitical space.”

Browne voiced his concern over the impact of global conflicts on small, vulnerable nations. “Whenever they create these global tensions and senseless wars, as in the case of Ukraine and Russia, it’s the poor, vulnerable people in countries like Antigua and Barbuda who suffer,” he remarked, urging an end to the escalating tensions.

The Prime Minister concluded his speech by reaffirming Antigua and Barbuda’s steadfast support for China in international forums. “The PRC can continue to count on the support of Antigua and Barbuda. We are not a fair-weather friend. We defend the PRC in international forums, and we’re not afraid to do so,” Browne said. “We do so for the mutual benefit of Antigua and Barbuda, and certainly in the interest of the PRC, which, as I said before, is easily the most benevolent country on the planet.”

The Booby Alley Housing Project represents one of the most substantial grant-funded housing initiatives in Antigua and Barbuda’s history, underscoring the robust partnership between Antigua and Barbuda and China.

  1. Well spoken Mr PM, China Government think of themselves as partner to the rest of the World, and not master of all, when the western colonizers Governments bring lectures and sanctions, China brings developments without draconian policies that cause hardship to people of undeveloped countries.

I hope Antigua and Barbuda will be able to tap into the BRICS New Development Bank and BRICS Pay.

  3. This is where national security and an intelligence agency would then immediately investigate any government official who have expressed what PM Brown have said. I would need to know what he gave up for this because we all know he sure gave up things.

China is not an idiot. Antigua and Barbuda may be but certainly not China and Russia.

  4. @my way of helping, at least China is giving something, it is called trade, the western Colonizers took all and gave back nothing but sanctions and draconian agreements
