PM Browne Plans To Take Away The Barbuda Council’s Authority Over Sand-Mining And Subleasing

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says he will be going to Parliament next week to strip the Barbuda Council of at least two of its responsibilities: its authority over sand-mining and subleasing.

“We will be going to Parliament in about two weeks and we’re going to change the law and give that authority to central government. I believe, too, they have the authority for subleases. We’re going to change it and give it to the central government,” Browne said.

Recently, the Barbuda Council made a formal request to the Chief Town and Country Planner at the Development Control Authority (DCA) for a stop order on the construction work being done by the Peace Love and Happiness (PLH) company.

Barbuda Council Chair, Calsey Beazer-Joseph stated that the stop order request was in no way intended to obstruct the decisions of the ABLP administration.

However, Browne expressed disappointment with the perpetual efforts of the Council to undermine his administration.

“If everything that we do, they seek to create these obstacles, are we to sit back and allow them to be obstructive or do we push forward to ensure the continued advancement of Barbuda for the benefit of the Barbuda people primarily, and for all Antiguans and Barbudans?” said Browne.

Browne added that he will further observe the actions of the Barbuda council and will resort to amending the law further to strip them of authority if necessary.

  2. Wonder why it took so long for the government to act? We are one nation……the minister made it clear that the council is an agency within the government. Until such time they secede the central government has the authority to administrate what goes on in Barbuda. Obstructionist should be dealt with accordingly as the government sees necessary. How much longer will these shenanigan between politicians will be allowed to continue before drastic measures are taken?

    One negative issue, which keeps plaguing this political party from its inception, in the 1960’s is, it has always been a coalition of various factions, which even though the party has a strong enough ‘grass roots’ base, the party can never seem to find the COHESIVE mechanism, to hold it together, over long periods of time.
    In my opinion, these factions are always fighting in house, thus weakening their position; whereas, the Labour Party tends to hold itself together, by looking out for each other.

  8. I think that Antigua should separate from Barbuda. Let the Barbuda stand on it own or back to England.

    • Trevor has been threatening to DIVORCE Barbuda from Antigua. But I guess it dawned on him that Barbuda is not self-sufficiently. So he changed his tune to now say that Antigua should let them go. What a coward and snake-oil salesman he is.

My opinion, Trevor is trying all in his power to stay relevant , he wants to be king of the ashes his care for the Barbuda people is to keep them under developed and dependent on the council and the BPM for everything and it is not right . We are one country with two islands and both of them needs development . I’m so proud of PM Gaston Brown to take the bull by the horn and do what you have to do cause I know the majority of the entire population is behind u that’s why we gave ur gov 15 seats in Parliament. Let Trevor do what ever he wants to do after . The country is way bigger than Trevor or his BPM minions .

  11. Long overdue-never seen such nonsense as the things that goes on in Barbuda.How can the Barbuda Council request a stop order from DCA and why would the DCA honor such request? Barbuda council is not the Government and has no authority to exercise such powers..They are really going over board now.Halt them in their tracks and bring them into reality because Walker and his crew seem to be living in some fantasy land or something..

    • Jim Jones has the BPM wrapped around his little finger. It will be very difficult for them to break free from his hypnotism. He basically called them lazy and good-for-nothing, but they still bow down to him.
