Browne Hints at Snap Election Amid UPP Turmoil

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has warned he may call a snap election if the United Progressive Party (UPP) fails to address its internal struggles, marked by recent high-profile departures.

Speaking to State Media at Minister Rawdon Turner’s swearing-in ceremony, Browne stated, “I would be more inclined to call a general election if the UPP doesn’t get its act together.”

The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) recently retained the St. Peter constituency in a by-election following the tragic death of independent MP Asot Michael, who had won the seat after splitting from the ABLP.

While elections are set for 2028, the Prime Minister holds the authority to call them earlier.

  1. The UPP had better announce their candidates now so as not to urge the PM to calling a snap elections. There is still a lot of work to be done that has been initiated by the current administration. They would need a clear mandate to continue the work. If, in fact, you are unable to remedy the rifts in your party, how could yoi expect to be seen as having the capacity to lead this country. It would get worse internally if you were given the chance.
Carry the sinking ship to shore and find creative ways to plug the leaks.

  2. Gaston Brown, why don’t you go and change the pampers you wearing.. like you start smelling you own mess. You have the people of this country like yoyos. You have won St. Peter, good for you, but that doesn’t give you the right to threaten the opposition to shape up or you going call election. Call it now if you feel you bad but be careful no one knows the future but God and you are surely not him..

  3. Ha! Ha! Ha! The Fable of “The GREEDY Dog And His Bone”????

……… Most of The Persons of the P M’s School Days would know That Fable ……Please REMIND him of the Outcome of THIS Story …..

  4. The arrogance of Prime Minister Browne shows no bounds. To think that he would call a General Election because in his view, the UPP “cannot get their act together”.

My heart bleeds for my country, due to the continuous broken manifesto promises from the ABLP.

As an individual and successful businessman, all I’ve ever wanted was that fellow Antiguans would also benefit as well.

Business opportunities for Antiguans are still wanting; better housing is in dire need; and we are still waiting – after two terms of Browne’s tutelage – for a decent water supply system and road infrastructure.

Antiguans pockets are still empty, and food cupboards are bare, yet the ABLP keep racking-up votes. How?

The political demise in Antigua seems real folks!

It is now down to the “real” supporters of the ABLP to hold Gaston Browne and the party to account for all the above – but will they?

I shed no tears for myself, but for the citizens of this great country of ours.

    ALL THE BEST …

  5. In all seriousness UPP does need to get their act together! Sadly. everyone jumps off a sinking ship. That’s probably why UPP was not able to field Harriet as their candidate again. Whenner failed miserably as he got less votes than Harriet whose votes were split up between a 4 man race. UPP needs to rethink their policy of fielding loyal candidates versus those who have the ability to win! Turner’s weakness was that he is not a people person so a good counter attack would have been to get a candidate who is a social butterfly. Instead, they chose a candidate who pulls down people and is generally not likeable. in every way, Whenner was worst than Turner. In the end, UPP got their loyal servant, who got a thorough thrashing at the polls. Is loyalty really more important than winning?

  6. Mr. Priminister what new? You cannot last for 5 years because of lack of sleep. Lest you forgot the outcome of the last one. Always remember KARMA is a pay back. You are not going to be in power forever. The seed you sow you will definitely reap some day. Treat people with respect sir.

  7. Hahahaha call it. Catch them with their pants down….. Just kidding. Don’t call it … But on a real UPP needs to get their shit together. We need a stronger opposition representations

  8. That’s shrewd political machinations by Gaston and who ever advising him, to create this narrative in the public domain under an olive branch he is offering good advise to upp, he is building on the narrative that UPP is not ready, but what I see in this era is that the people should stop the fanaticism of the ALP and UPP and vote in blocks instead of individually in order to get effective representation and enjoy the incentives that the white foreigners enjoy, the one percenters form a block that finance our merchant politicians and secure all government contracts and concessions, if we form blocks to vote we will get control of the benefits that out ancestors blood were shed for, this land, and not the whites enjoy the beach front and concessions, can Gaston work with me to empower the descendants of slaves?

  9. “Following the tragic death of Asot Michael”. You mean following the tragic assassination of Asot Michael!

The families of the many murdered and missing victims in this country, will never get closure under this inept Government.

Yes UPP has their problems, and they have been fighting to hold their members accountable, but are they the ones running the country,no they are not.

@Dave Ray. You talk about mandates of your government, but what other mandate that can be more important than a country that’s govern by law and order?
This Government has failed the citizens of this country in that most human department most miserably, so I don’t know what bloody mandate you are talking about?
It’s just been all talk and very little actions on behalf of the people of Antigua.

Let’s face the truth @Dave Ray. Tell me one murder that has been truly solved by this law enforcement agencies in this country, name me one?
Name me one time that crime prevention has been mandated in Antigua by this government, where the benefits were reap by its citizens?

All this Government has done is violate people’s rights with these foolish curfews and showing support to so-called gangsters with football matches, that’s this government crime prevention techniques.
Where are the arrest of these drug lords that are bringing in the drugs and guns, which has been sky rocketing under this Gatson Brownes administration.

So your mandates are outdated, because they are not working, period.
10 years, and you can’t bring forth one thing that this government has done that has impacted the crime rate in Antigua, name one?

The audacity of you Gatson Brownes supporters is just astonishing to say the least. People are way more poorer and in more debt now than at the time this government took over, how is that Mr Dave Ray, how is that?

So to hell with this Governments mandate, because they are not working.

  10. Take the advice of the PM and get your act together you guys are splinters divisive amongst your selves and it would get worse because of your mindset take the advice if it can be done because it seems like a herculean task so I would encourage the PM to take the advantage it’s just politics and don’t be sympathetic put blows like rain and take full advantage of the situation

  11. And hopefully @ Harder they come, as I rightly mentioned earlier, that it will be now incumbent on ABLP supporters like yourself to hold this government to account and make good on their manifesto promises.

Yes, UPP’S defeat wasn’t a good look, but if genuine ABLP supporters really do want to see “real” progress now and in the foreseeable future, then please hold Gaston Browne to account on what he says he’s going to do for Antigua & Barbuda.

Antiguans regularly tapping their empty pockets and looking around town and the rest of the country witnessing the poverty and dereliction isn’t good.

OUR EYES DO NOT DECEIVE US!

So if you are patriotic – as you make out – and want the best for this great country, then hold this government to account – because the hardworking citizens; the opposition; and the electorate cannot it now seems …
