Prime Minister Gaston Browne is defending his track record on Barbuda’s development, even as tempers continue to flare on both sides over the PLH project.
“There is no Prime Minister in the history of this country that has shown more interest and has done more for the Barbudan people than Gaston Browne — personally and as the Prime Minister of this country,” Browne said on Saturday.
“In fact, my Government has done more than any other government in the history of Antigua and Barbuda for Barbuda.
“You will recall that one of the things we did was to give them a concrete road from River going right into Codrington. That costs us nearly about $10 million. How many communities in this country can boast of a concrete road of several miles long?”
The Prime Minister also pointed to the more than $50 million being spent to build a new international airport that can accommodate jet traffic.
“They have a little airport there now that can’t even take the smallest LIAT, and we’re giving them an airport now that can take jet traffic. That too, they’re trying to frustrate,” Browne said.
“We also have a project, for example, prior to Hurricane Irma in which we are going to spend about $25 million to establish one megawatt of green energy for Barbuda plus some other ancillary services. That project is being implemented now; and here’s a Council trying to present itself as though they’re the ones initiating the project.”
The Prime Minister said that after the passage of Hurricane Irma, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela provided a $3 million grant to help with the recovery.
“It is me who picked up the phone and called [President Nicholas] Maduro and said, ‘Look, I know you’re struggling but right now we’re on our face, we need your help.’
“Immediately after the hurricane President Maduro sent us two military aircraft to assist with the recovery, one of which we used to evacuate them. And the irony about it, they told the entire world that I took them off Barbuda so I could steal their land, when my Government took them off of Barbuda so that we could save lives; so that we can prevent any outbreak of Cholera or any waterborne disease,” Prime Minister Browne added.

PM How strange not one of your haters has come as yet to refute any of your claims so far. Not even any member from the Council. I guess after three days you may say that they have no defense whatsoever. Just rest your case.
