“10 Years of VC Bird Day: A Standalone Tribute to Antigua’s National Hero Amid Political Controversy”

Prime Minister Gaston Browne marked the 10th anniversary of the restoration of VC Bird Day as a standalone celebration by paying tribute to Antigua and Barbuda’s first national hero, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr., and condemning efforts by political opponents to diminish his legacy.

Speaking to a crowd gathered in honor of the “Father of the Nation,” PM Browne described Sir Vere as a transcendent leader whose contributions to the country’s socioeconomic and political development stand unmatched.

He emphasized the importance of setting aside a day dedicated solely to recognizing Sir Vere’s achievements, highlighting that such a tribute inspires current and future generations to strive for excellence.

The prime minister criticized the opposition for their actions during the 2005–2013 period, when VC Bird Day was merged with National Heroes Day.

Browne argued that this decision diluted the significance of Sir Vere’s contributions, calling it a “vacuous expression of consolation” rather than a meaningful celebration of his legacy.

He lauded his administration’s move to restore VC Bird Day in 2014, noting that the decision underscored the late leader’s unique role in Antigua and Barbuda’s history.

“VC Bird must be celebrated each year on his birthday,” Browne declared, adding that attempts to disrespect or boycott the day only serve to divide the nation. He urged all Antiguans and Barbudans to reflect on the values Sir Vere embodied—vision, courage, and empathy—and to recommit themselves to the collective advancement of the country.

This year’s celebration, Browne said, also serves as a reminder of the progress made under his administration, which he credited to the foundation laid by Sir Vere and his contemporaries. T

he prime minister reiterated his government’s dedication to national unity and development, encouraging citizens to embrace the legacy of Sir Vere Bird as a guide for the country’s future.

I’m neither here nor there about the holiday. However it can also be argued that by moving hero’s day to some date, and there’s no stopping and observing line what is done for the first PM of Antigua and Barbuda also diluted their significant contribution to nation building

  2. I’m not with the politics but as far as I see it if Gaston lose this election he’ll be better and holds his word next time he’s in power cause cmon this country could be doing so much better

  3. WHO CARES, the guy doesn’t even know y’all fighting over who’s coming to lay a wreath for a long dead person. Antiguans are so petty and childish. GROW UP YOU CLOWNS…..
