Browne Blasts Opposition as ‘Constellation of Fools’
Prime Minister Gaston Browne delivered a blistering critique of the United Progressive Party (UPP) during an Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) rally in St. George over the weekend, referring to the opposition as a “constellation of fools” and singling out several of its leading figures for harsh criticism.
In a fiery speech to supporters, Browne dismissed the UPP as a party in disarray, lashing out at MP Algernon “Serpent” Watts, Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle, and UPP Chairperson D. Gisele Isaac, claiming the party was being held together by “vindictive and destructive” personalities.
“There are individuals who sometimes may not have university training but have the competence to represent,” Browne said. “One thing I can say to you without any fear of contradiction—Serpent is not one of them.”
He went further, casting doubt on Watts’ moral character by invoking the origin of his nickname. “His name is not Serpant, you know. His name is Serpent,” Browne quipped. “And you know who gave him that name? A pastor. And when a pastor calls you a serpent, you know what kind of evil individual that person is.”
Browne accused the UPP of lacking leadership and vision, stating that all “sensible” people had already fled the party, including former UPP members such as Dr. Mansoor and Dr. Benajmin. He claimed the remaining leadership was incapable of governing.
“They are a constellation of idiots,” he said, “and among them is D. Gisele Isaac, the current misrepresentative of this constituency Algernon Watts, who is a ‘nincompoop,” using a colloquial term to describe her alleged ineptitude.
Browne also took aim at Jamale Pringle’s capacity to lead, rhetorically asking the crowd whether they could trust him to represent the country on the international stage.
The Prime Minister’s remarks reflect a deepening war of words ahead of anticipated general elections. While Browne has not officially named a date, he suggested that his administration is monitoring the political landscape closely and will choose the right moment to go to the polls.
Despite the harsh tone, Browne maintained that the ABLP remains committed to good governance and development, contrasting his administration’s record with what he called the “destructive elements” of the opposition.
“We are renewing the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party. There’s a rebirth, a renaissance taking place,” he declared.
