As Antigua and Barbuda marks its 43rd Independence, the government has reiterated its commitment to empowering the nation’s youth through education and job training programs. Prime Minister Gaston Browne, in his recent address, highlighted the importance of these initiatives in addressing the needs of young people in the country.
The Youth Empowerment and Employment Program (YEEP) includes a Second Chance Program aimed at individuals who did not complete traditional secondary education. This initiative provides alternative pathways for youth to gain qualifications and improve their employment prospects. The program is part of a broader effort to tackle high youth unemployment rates and equip young citizens with the skills needed in the local job market.
The Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education (ABICE) has been instrumental in offering vocational training to over 800 participants. The courses cover essential skills relevant to sectors such as hospitality, construction, and healthcare. The government’s investment in these programs aims to match workforce skills with the demands of the economy.
In addition, the UWI Five Islands Campus is set to receive a $200 million investment starting in 2025, which will expand access to higher education for local students. This expansion is expected to enhance the university’s capacity and offer a wider range of academic programs, facilitating educational advancement for Antiguans and Barbudans.
Scholarship programs for studying abroad are also available, providing further opportunities for youth to pursue higher education and gain international experience. These initiatives aim to foster a generation of leaders equipped to contribute to the development of their home country upon their return.
The Prime Minister’s address emphasized that these education and employment initiatives are vital for the country’s future, especially in light of recent economic challenges. He called on parents to support their children’s education and urged the private sector to create more internship and job opportunities for young people.
With these programs in place, the government aims to reduce unemployment rates among youth and promote a more skilled workforce in Antigua and Barbuda.
