PM Browne Announces Youthful Leadership Transition in Senate and Health Sector

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced plans for a generational shift within Antigua and Barbuda’s political leadership, naming two rising young politicians for key roles. Senator Shenella Govia, currently serving in the Senate, will soon be appointed as the Leader of Public Business, with a promotion to a ministerial position also in the works.

“Shenella is probably about 32 or 33 years old, and we’re going to make her the leader of public business in the Senate,” Browne said.

Prime Minister Browne also spoke highly of Michael Joseph, a new face in the political scene and a young leader from Rural West. He revealed plans to appoint Joseph to the Senate as early as next week, alongside his promotion to Junior Minister in Health, where he will work under Senior Minister Molwyn Joseph.

Browne framed these moves as a deliberate response to public feedback following the election.

He emphasized that it was time for older politicians to make way for emerging leaders, noting that this generational change would strengthen the government’s institutional continuity and relevance.

The Prime Minister further highlighted the administration’s youth-oriented programs, including a unique entrepreneurial program to fund and support young people—a first of its kind in the nation’s history.

“There’s no other administration in this country that has ever established an entrepreneurial program to provide funding for people, especially youth,” he stated, positioning the program as a core aspect of the government’s commitment to empowering young Antiguans and Barbudans.

  1. Succession planning is a must.

But it should not be done at the expense of disrespecting the older ones who have made an invaluable contribution and are now been pushed into the corner.

Some can still make worth while contribution to the organization they are a member of.

If age is an issue why don’t the PM & others pack their bundle & trollent off the scene of our politics?

  2. It’s really inspiring to see these young politicians being given the opportunity to step up and take on more responsibility. By promoting fresh talent like Shenella Govia and Michael Joseph, the government is showing that they recognize the importance of nurturing the next generation of leaders.
Empowering young people and giving them a chance to make a difference is a crucial step towards building a strong and vibrant future for Antigua and Barbuda. It’s great to see the government taking such a proactive approach!

  3. CONGRATULATIONS to both YOUNG Antiguans!

When will UPP appoint the 25% youth to the Senate???? Geriatric David Massiah needs to go!!!!

  4. Good to see the ABLP is serious about youth…..

Now will there be any youth in the 10 candidates to be unveiled by Pringle? (October passed and nothing)

Chaos Demon say Alex Browne lazy, so maybe George Wehner son can take his spot. Alex busy running taxi and making plenty money under Labour Party government

  5. @RICHARD LEWIS – The Handwriting is on the Wall for you. Cut your losses now!!!!! You have a Chairman and Party Leader who do NOT support you. They wouldn’t rest until they got your branch chair to resign. You think that was a “coincidence”???? Old people say who don’t hear will feel. Your days with UPP are numbered. Remember the following:

    1. The Chairman made it clear that she wants Richard Lewis out of the party.
    2. She revealed that a recent poll showed Richard Lewis trailing Michael Joseph in the St. John’s Rural West constituency.
    3. The Chairman expressed her lack of trust in Richard Lewis, stating that he can no longer win his seat and should step aside.

With all this recent promotion of Michael Joseph and him getting more exposure to leadership and opportunities to help Rural West, it is obvious the decks are stacked against you.

P.S. – remember that in the UPP Constitution the LEADER HAS V-E-T-O POWER! So if you think Pringle will allow you to run on his ticket, you damn lie!!!
