Plastics Recycling Plant To Be Established In Antigua & Barbuda

7

In an effort to become the first “a future island”, Antigua and Barbuda will have a plastics recycling plant.

All the plastic wastes will be collected and turned into other products that will keep plastics out of the landfill and the surrounding seas.

The Ministry of the Environment is about to sign an MOU with the firm involved, and the cost of the operation will be absorbed by the firm.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne made mention to this initiative on September 28, 2019 at the Global Citizen Festival where he said his country will become the first “Future Island Nation” in the Caribbean.

Addressing over 60,000 attendees at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park Saturday night, Browne said, that through a new partnership with Parley for Oceans, Antigua and Barbuda will be adopting the Parley Air Strategy.

Parley Air is the strategy to end the fast-growing threat of marine plastic pollution.

“Antigua and Barbuda is committing to building a Parley Air Base – a recycling station that actually works – which will intercept approximately 27, 000 tons of plastic on the beaches and from polluting the environment by 2030, thereby helping eliminate plastic pollutants from our shores,” Browne told the festival.

  1. It’s all well your concerned about the future or pretend to be, cause if you really was worried about the future you would waste the tax’s payers money like you were doing and then get frustrated because the dollars not turning like it used to. Back to plastics, who is this firm and what’s in it for antiguans ? It’s good there absorbing the operations cost but under what contract. Will GARBAGE sorry plastic be IMPORTED sorry typo shipped from other countries in the area to be recycled? Just asking cause we already have Cuban frogs / African giant snails don’t think we can deal with anything else now

  2. Lol what is the name of the company and who are the owners of this company that will be embarking on this mission.

  3. Put a band on single use plastic bags and increase the amount of single use plastic bottles for water so that the recycling plant can be profitable.

  4. A study was done in the early 90s and it showed that unless we get all the OECS palstic waste it was not a feasible thing to do. The processing was too expensive at that time. But guess we have grown leap and bounds in the use of plastic that it now may be feasible. However I still believe we need to mix all these together with a burner down at the dump. And at the same time think about the possibility of getting electricity out of the entire process. Do not forget the glass bottles as well. Its time we start implementing separate waste collection. We already started with the bins in town, lets now move to the villages and perhaps it can be funded by the Green Climate Fund.

    • Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! “What natural responses would occur in the relationships, attitudes toward the environment, kinship patterns, … and historical referent points for People of African descent in the Caribbean if there had not been any intervention of colonialism or enslavement?” (Asante 1980)! The answer begins with “a revolutionary shift in thinking proposed as a constructural adjustment to black dislocation disorientation, decenteredness, and lack of agency,” and ends at a destiny – Building Solid Institutions, Technology Capacity and a Caribbean Civilization – which asserts the central role of Caribbean People within the context of Caribbean History!

“The processing was too expensive at that time.” – FTS! What has changed! No Member of Parliament or Cabinet has the Engineering or Scientific Capacity! Why has China reduced recycling from other countries waste! Given A&B’s relationship, the answer would be easy to get from the Ambassador! No Engagement with OECS and/or CARICOM based Climate Change Initiatives!

With the prevailing North East Trade Winds, on which Rock (A, B or R)will the Parley Air System Plant be located! Given the Visions to move to wind, solar power, wave generating technology, and/or geothermal energy, what will be the generating power source/medium! Finally we have a reason to firmly plant the flag on Redonda, complete with people and industry and not only the lowly “ghroung ghoul” (ground lizard), powered by wind and/or a payback from the People of Montserrat with geothermal energy over a distance of less than 17 miles or 27.5 km! No polluting industry on Antigua and/or Barbuda! The marooned goats will rue the day they refused to be airlifted to beautiful Antigua “where the beach is just the beginning” and not live in perfect harmony until the Parley Air System Development was planned, designed and implemented!
