Petition Launched to Honor First Female Commissioner as Part of Women’s History Month

Ms. Delano Christopher, Antigua and Barbuda’s first female police commissioner

A personal encounter with a compassionate female police officer in the community, sparked the imagination of a young girl and inspired her interest in public service.

Jermaine N. Edwards, a UPP contender in the Primary in St. John’s Rural South Constituency, recalls when she got lost at Carnival City as a youngster.  Police Officer, Ms. Delano Christopher, recognized Jermaine, and returned her safely to her parents.

As the nation mourns the passing of former Police Commissioner Delano Christopher, Jermaine Edwards has started a petition that proposes that the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda rename American Road, where the police headquarters is located, to honor Ms. Christopher’s legacy.

“Having grown up in the community of Nut Grove, Ms. Christopher had a lasting impact and garnered the respect of everyone, especially the youth. I was elated when she was appointed the first female police commissioner in the region. Her accomplishments inspired me to dedicate my life to public service and pursue studies in criminal justice,” Edwards said.

Edwards notes that female police officers tend to have a positive influence on the perceived job performance, trustworthiness, and fairness of a police agency.

She believes that in many cases, they tend to influence the public’s willingness to cooperate in the production of positive public safety outcomes.

“Her presence as a female officer made me feel at ease and sparked my interest in law enforcement. Female officers were not common then, and she seemed like a giant to me. At a time when youth violence is at an all-time high, we must memorialize Ms. Christopher’s legacy and the contributions that she made at the community, national, and regional level,” Edwards added.

With the celebration of Women’s History Month throughout the month of March, the UPP hopeful notes the low level of female representation in Parliament.

Further, in a historically matriarchal society, Edwards questions why only one of our six national heroes is female. She vows to bring greater gender balance by ensuring that women play a greater role in leadership in all areas of society.

Ms. Delano Christopher will be laid to rest on March 13th and will be remembered as a trailblazer who was trusted and respected by her peers and throughout the community.

This often translated into achieving more effective community policing strategies, especially in addressing conflicts and dispute resolution strategies among the youth and adults alike.

  1. The petition to rename American Road in honour of Police Commissioner Delano Christopher is an excellent idea and all of us women throughout our twin island state should support this. Also our men. Enough respect to our sheroe who is now our ancestors.

  2. No offense, but are there weight and fitness standards in the police and military anymore?

Too many carbs in the Antigua diet. People need to focus on eating just veggies, fruits and meats. Stop eating bread, candy and bananas.

Our health was better when we were a colony of the UK.

  3. let Limpy Joe honour she….he is a known skirt chaser

  4. You all expect that the commissioner of police to push anything for Delano Christopher and he is not an Antiguan, he doesn’t feel the way an Antiguan will feel, that’s what happens when we give foreigners top position in the country, so in customs Radu Badu ain’t care about the custom officer death, and a prime minister without any ideology towards his race won’t care, just sell to any race with money all the land and positions like ambassador etc.

  5. So LET be ,Ms Christopher should be HONOURED
The FIRST FEMALE POLICE COMMISSIONER in the REGION
A bit Late ,but better late than never

  6. First female commissioner of Police and that all there is to her so called legacy there is nothing else. She is the second worst commissioner of police in the history of Antigua and Barbuda. She did absolutely NOTHING to empower other female officers in fact she treated them even worst than the males. She did not promote no officers during her time as top cop. She was full of SHIT. That’s why she was fired and replaced by a MAN. May she rest in piece but there is nothing to celebrate about her other than her being the fist female commissioner.
