The Supermarket Tour and Screening also included nutrition education sessions regarding the benefits of healthy eating along with food demonstrations and sampling of low sodium meals and delicious, nutritious smoothies. Participants were treated to giveaways and supermarket specials throughout the day.

The objective of the event was to encourage the general public to make healthier choices, especially related to reducing the consumption of salt or sodium, which is a major contributing factor to hypertension (high blood pressure), stroke, heart disease and other non-communicable disease (NCDs).

This Tour and Screening event was the final activity of the “Cook with Love: Shake the Salt Habit” campaign. Other activities included sharing of messages on traditional and social media, zoom webinars, herb garden giveaways, and pop-up educational displays with fresh seasoning samples and seedling distribution.

The campaign was spearheaded by the Nutrition Department within the Ministry of Health and brought together several key partners which include: the Antigua and Barbuda Wellness Committee, Antigua and Barbuda Diabetes Association, Antigua and Barbuda Association of Nutritionists and Dietitians {ABANDi}, Medical Benefits Scheme {MBS}, Agricultural Extension Division, Perry Bay Supermarket and Private Farmers.

  1. Great idea but wouldn’t it have been better to have given it some advertising prior to the event? Maybe they did and I just did not see it. I sure wish I had known about it before hand.
