Mounting concerns exist over prolonged drought in the Panama Canal, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the Israel-Hamas situation, potentially increasing shipping costs and threatening importers, brokers, and consumers.

Darwin Telemaque, Manager of the Antigua Port Authority, highlighted challenges at the Panama Canal due to low water levels, impacting North and South America. Normally accommodating 30+ vessels daily, the canal’s revenue is crucial, but rainfall shortages are challenging operations.

Telemaque explained in a recent interview that the water situation is worsening, reducing daily ship traffic, leading to cargo delays and high costs. Some ships take longer routes, adding to delays and costs, exacerbated by COVID-19 impacts on shipping. He warns that challenges won’t improve soon.

The Port Management Association, chaired by Telemaque, plans a March 20th webinar with Panamanian authorities to understand ground realities and impacts on North America. Currently, no significant challenges are reported for cargo departing from Florida.

  1. Wish he would stop minding PMAC business and concentrate on the lack of safety, lack of stackers, lack of Port owned trucks, lack of forklifts, lack of a working crane and a lack of trained workers at what he considers his own personal Port.

  2. The solutions to all this problems was done.
