Representatives from the Pan American Health Organization completed a perinatal review at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre in Antigua and Barbuda today with the aim of improving the quality of care at the institution.

A perinatal review is key to both the SLBMC and the Ministry of Health, Wellness as we seek to review the near misses and the deaths more accurately so that appropriate planning, corrective steps and training can take place in 2022 and beyond to make every baby count.

The review, which took place from March 28th to April 1st, 2022 included staff from the Community Clinics, the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) and Technicians from the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment.

As a part of the review, patients of SLBMC, clients from the district clinics and private offices were interviewed.

The process also included the carrying out of a staff survey.

In addition, the PAHO team which comprised Neonatologists, Public Health Specialist and an Obstetrician also assisted with carrying out an audit which reviewed the environment, facility staff and parental/client perceptions.
