Paaws Animal shelter gets major donation of food

DAILY OBSERVER: A local charity which runs the country’s main animal rescue shelter and has been fighting to stay open amid plummeting funds is celebrating the arrival of a 40ft container of food.

PAAWS says the donation is enough to feed the 100-plus dogs and cats at its Parham-based facility for the next six months.

Even better, the shelter is paying the kind gesture forward by gifting some of the food to fellow animal causes, including the Dogs and Cats of Antigua charity and the police K9 unit.

PAAWS’ manager Colin Quinn told Observer the donation came via US-based non-profit group Greater Good Charities which provides meals for shelter animals impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

He estimated that the 40,000 pounds of dog and cat food would last the shelter for five to six months.

“It’s a great relief because for a while we really don’t have to think about spending money on food, which is basically the shelter’s biggest expense,” Quinn added.

PAAWS has been in existence for 25 years and operates entirely on donations. Over the years, it has successfully rehomed thousands of animals rescued from Antigua’s streets.
