Health Minister Molwyn Joseph released data late Thursday showing 23 young people, 18 years and under, had contracted COVID-19 in Antigua & Barbuda over the past 45 days.
“COVID has now taken a direct strike on the young people of Antigua & Barbuda,” the Minister cautioned.
He said the coronavirus used to primarily affect the elderly, but the data is now showing “a lot more young people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s are coming down regularly with the virus.”
“Twenty-three children in about 45 days in Antigua & Barbuda have contracted this virus and have become ill. One of them is in the hospital right now, a 4-year-old,” the Minister revealed.
He said the figure included two 18-year-olds.
“We have a 7-month-old who died at the hospital from COVID, a 7-month-old. We have, within the last 45 days, an 11-month-old, a 1-year-old, 2-year-old, a 4-year-old, a 5-year-old, two 6-year-old, a 7-year-old, a 9-year-old, a 10-year-old, three 12-year-old, a 13-year-old, three 15-year-old, one 16-year-old, two 17-year-old and two 18-year-old,” Joseph reported.
The Health Minister said people who chose not to get vaccinated were contributing to children in the country becoming ill and dying from COVID-19.
“The adults in this country must understand they are doing a disservice to the young people of Antigua & Barbuda, who do not have it within their own authority to make decisions for themselves,” he said.
Joseph insisted “children in our country should not be the victim of irresponsible adult behaviour.”

Even if they are accurate, who believes anything from the mouth of that messenger. They need to take a back seat and let someone who is actually qualified for their job do the talking. I did not realized. There was another death by Covid-19 in Antigua.I looked at the Dashboard a day ago and did not see any changes.
He stated within the past 45 days. Looking at the dashboard for July 21, 2021, there was 42 deaths. Search the news archives and you will see the mention of the 7 month old child who died and had Covid. Recall the mom being upset because the she felt the hospital did not recognize it as covid early enough. It was mentioned in the cabinet press conference on the 22nd and the covid dashboard that day reflected an additional death. If you have not gotten vaccinated, please with urgency go and get it done
The vaccine does not prevent covid nor does it prevent you from spreading it to your children, wearing your mask and sanitizing is a better approach in preventing covid.

The funny thing, we don’t manufacture COVID in Antigua, and we had several weeks with Zero cases. So where did it come from? The airport was open during those Zero cases days, so what has changed, what policies did we change? I can recall one, vaccinated individuals no longer need to quarantine, they can walk right through and go to work the next day. How many persons will they infect before they realize they might have contracted it along the way?

Children has been getting it since February. I had a child in my class whose mom told me her daughter had it. The student was absent for a few days before I enquired about her and that’s when I was informed. The mom said that the ministry of health told her not to say anything.
