Over 1000 Hotel Workers Back On The Job

(Hurst Cabinet Notes)

The opening of the borders is necessary in order to get the economy growing again, and to generate employment, the Chairman explained.

More than 1,100 hotel workers have returned to their jobs since July 1, 2020, and more than 8,000 passengers have arrived Antigua since then.

It is anticipated that the numbers will continue to grow and that more job opportunities will be generated in the months ahead as the winter tourism season dawns.

The Cabinet repeated that the 25-person threshold is derived from science, intended to enable successful contact tracing; a number larger than 25 makes the tracing and tracking exceedingly difficult, if not impossible.

The wearing of masks contributes significantly to the protection of others and the mask-wearer, and is compelled by law.

  1. Bad move. VCBIA should remain closed. Labor party headed by Gaston Browne had no contingency plan for a pandemic. Now they are flying by the seat of their pants. Wrong plan, wrong direction. As a government; resources must be set aside to sustain the economy during times of recession. Labor party you had no plan. UPP turned to the IMF. They had no choice. All the chief servant would say. “It’s the global economic crisis.” What’s the purpose of taxation if the taxes you are paying bring you no personal benefit In your time of need. Voters need to examine their conscience and ask the question. Am I better off today than I was 12 years ago? How many ground breaking ceremonies. How many incomplete projects? How many broken promise of an economic powerhouse? How many days has your home gone without potable water, reliable electricity, reduction in fuel cost, increased utilities, rising cost of food and essential goods and services. Ask those questions and you will see your government has no clue. They just rise like hot air and disappear. It’s a damn shame we’re in 2020 and still rationing water.

  2. Hotel workers – on the job?
How many are Antiguans again? One big property hires jamaicans while another big property hires asians over locals.
Which agency is ensuring that hotel workers are kept safe? Some of these workers are being advantaged.

    • I mean, you can say it needs to remain closed, but at the same time, what happens to those individuals who depend on tourists to come in the country and make their living from that. Fact if the matter is, covid19 is here and not gonna be gone anytime soon. The best course of action we can take is to adapt to this *new normal* and make the necessary changes to combat it. Antigua and Barbuda is doing considerably well handling the pandemic compared to alot of developed and developing countries. Rather than let this be a burden to us, we should adapt and evolve to the necessary changes.

      • We emphatise with those workers Titan, but to answer your question, we must all re-tool.
To change one must first accept the need for change. Many persons don’t want to change. Change is hard, really really hard, but covid has shown us that change is a must, if we want to reduce our exposures. We may get a cure/vaccine soon, but until then: Shift, Change, & Move On.

  3. Max next time you open your mouth please breakdown the 8,000 passengers. Tell us the number of returning nationals, people going on to another destinations and caribbean nationals returning to A&B. I notice your misleading ststement by using passangers and not tourists. Question Max did all the 8,000 passengers stay at Bio- safety hotels and please name the Hotels that are open.

  4. The Government is doing an excellent job when we compare Antigua and Barbuda to the rest of the world… Politics cant change the reality, its there for the world to see… Come-een tourist season Antigua and Barbuda stands ready.

    • Excellent job, where? The good Lord is doing the work. But just remember, God is not mocked!!!
