Alvin Spencer, a resident of Ottos, has been sentenced to 14 months in His Majesty’s Prison after being remanded and awaiting sentencing.

He was involved in a shootout with police officers, along with another Ottos resident.

The sentencing took place on Tuesday, May 30, in the St. John’s Magistrates Court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh.

During the court appearance, Spencer, aged 33, received a six-month sentence for the ammunition charge and an additional eight months for possession of hashish.

He had previously been arrested alongside 30-year-old Kadeem Henry following the incident on Wednesday night, May 24.

Spencer pleaded guilty to the possession of 780 grams of hashish and two rounds of 9 mm ammunition.

In contrast, Henry denied the charges, and the prosecution did not present any evidence against him, resulting in his exoneration.

Similarly, Elvis Pelle, aged 21 and a resident of Villa, received a 15-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges of possessing a gun and ammunition.

This occurred on Wednesday, May 24, when Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh sentenced him to one year for firearm possession and three months for possession of ammunition.

  1. 14 months! Surely it should have been 14 years!

14 years would have sent out a very strong message to the criminal fraternity, and also let them know that the judiciary means business in halting the current rise in gun crimes.

Isn’t there some sort of appeal procedure to increase this particular sentence?

Come on Attorney General Benjamin, intervene and do something right for once!

    • You know for a person who claims to be intelligent you sure make politics turn you into a real idiot. The AG is not my favorite person but from since when he dictates to the courts on how to pass sentences. So must the AG tell the magistrate and judge how to do their job and how to sentences people or do they follow a sentencing guidelines which is set by the Eastern Caribbean Court. Come on dude for once just forget about politics and use your so called intelligenc.

    • When will you understand for God sake that the judiciary is independent. Do you always have to bring it down to politics.
I have called for the executive branche to take legislation to parliament to tie the hands of the judges and mandate mandatory minimum sentences for such crimes. This is laughable. Our police risks their lives and all this judge or magistrate can do is give this criminal who tried to kill a law enforcement officer 14 months? This is sad. Very sad

  2. So a man fire bullet in the direction of law enforcement. And he gets charge for bullet and hashish. Wtf.

Umm what happened to attempted murder. Are we waiting till a police get killed in shootout to set an example that people should respect law enforcement. ?

    Issa joke.

  3. Brixtonian, you are totally on point. How the hell these magistrates come up with these sentences is mind boggling. 14 months for possessing a gun and also using it against of all people law enforcement and in 1 year time this ass is back on the street.
Sometimes people who just get caught with Marijuana alone get more prison time.
This country makes me sick, actually it makes me flucking sick.

  4. I see why there’s an uptick in gun crimes in Antigua and Barbuda. Possession of an illegal gun and ammunition and you get 9 months in jail, shooting with intent at law enforcement officers and you get a slap on the wrist. This dark tunnel has no light at the end. According to a once famous old lady, “Antigua garn, Antigua garn.”

  5. All I want to see is a mug shot or some kind a photo of these people. Don’t you guy’s have camera? All these criminals and want to be Badman being arrested and not one picture.

  6. They need to change all these out dated laws they need to make an example out of those ass holes. The society needs to be cleans. Antigua has gone definitely wrong .

  7. Did they find the firearm? The news said ammunition charge. Not sure they found the gun??

Jail term need to be increased indeed for firearms and ammunition.

BTW a year is only 9 months in prison terms so this is not justifiable at all.

  8. Firing at the law, needs another year, maybe those charges will be brought up as soon as he walks out of prison hold him the same day and charge him again.

  9. The court must be working with these criminals….in 14 months this criminal will be back on the streets giving the police additional work to put him away again.

The court system is NOT delivering justice.

All the courts should return to trial by jury so that the will of the people can take effect.

  10. I believe the police prosecutor can appeal the judgement. But I wonder why it is that they don’t.
I wish our reporters could start doing their work and ask the Chief of Police these questions on our behalf.
All they do is sit in their offices and follow social media news. Pick up the damn phone and call the RPFAB

  11. I believe the headline might have misled most people, which is the reason for these comments. First off, the case was held in the magistrate court and I am sure he will have to later head to the high court. There was no mention of charges like attempted murder or anything like that against the police, which I am sure they will add a bit later. This is a smart move by the Police, let him go ahead and serve the time for the lesser sentences and then they will charge for the bigger matters later – longer time in prison.

  12. If you have sufficient evidence to charge someone with murder(first degree) then that person should never be on bail. I’ve seen in Antigua where persons are on bail for murder, and some of them intentional murder, so what are we expecting here in this case? The entire system of Antigua needs to be revamped, totally over hauled, totally.

  13. Sentence kinda light for a shootout with the police. Surely there must be facts wr don’t know. Must be
