Cabinet Stands with Vendors but Moves Ahead on Beautifying St John’s
The Government of Antigua and Barbuda says it remains committed to supporting small vendors in the heart of the capital, even as it prepares to enforce long-awaited plans to reorganise the area around the V.C. Bird bust and other parts in St John’s.
Cabinet has agreed to extend a grace period for vendors to remain temporarily in their current locations through the busy Easter weekend, recognising the period as one of their most profitable trading times.
The move is intended to soften the impact of the relocation process while maintaining momentum on efforts to enhance the city’s sanitation and aesthetics.
The deadline to move is today and the vendors must move to over 90 spaces inside the public marker if they wish to continue their trade.
Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst said the decision reflects a balance between economic opportunity and the need for urban revitalisation.
“Thursday and Saturday were allowed to continue for the benefit of vendors during this important trading period,” he noted, referring to the days immediately following the initial relocation deadline.
“But come Tuesday morning, the new arrangements will take effect.”
The relocation plan forms part of a broader initiative to upgrade public spaces, reduce congestion, and address longstanding sanitation concerns in the capital.
Officials say the decision also respects the cultural heritage of the V.C. Bird bust site, which serves as a focal point of national pride during Labour Day commemorations and other events.
While some vendors have voiced concerns about the transition, others say they are open to moving as long as the government provides suitable alternatives.
St John’s Development Corporation has been tasked with implementing the changes in consultation with the Cabinet.
The government has signalled that it will continue to engage with affected stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition.

The vendors are willing to move “as long as government provides suitable alternatives “!!!!!!
You see how lawless and entitled we have become!!!!
I urge the government to assist where necessary BUT NOT to be ordered to find alternative accommodation for lawless, arbitrary decisions by non-contributing vendors!
I cannot wait to see how the government flip flops once a few vendors who are lawbreakers for decades, demand the government provide them with a work environment or else they won’t vote for ABLP.
Hon. Turner and his team are doing an exceptionally good job. Antigua has never been so clean.
Congrats to Mr Turner and his team…Keep yù hand just so Turner..👏♥ 👏
Some of them could get together and start businesses in other communities e.g. community markets, food trucks, healthy vegetable related shops selling soups, salads, sandwiches, drinks etc.
The only place vegetable should be sold is inside the vegetable market. The management is known to take bribes from those foreign vendors, especially those Guyanese. Many of them have stalls in several locations. They are to the west of Sammy supermarket, they are in the western side of the vegetable market, they are on corner alley, they are on market street. Mother , father, sister, uncles, nieces and workers. Plenty of those men need to be taken off our streets and sent on construction. Too many of them just set up around the market and up town. Turner great job, around the vegetable market is too stink.
Anytime you leave one outside, you will have to return all .
