Opposition SLP wins landslide victory in St Lucia general election

18

After one term in opposition, the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) will form the next Government of Saint Lucia.

The party won 13 seats while the incumbent United Workers Party managed only two seats, the same number won by a pair of unique Independent candidates – Stephenson King, who recently departed from the UWP, and Richard Frederick, a self-proclaimed ‘Independent Labour candidate’.

Loop News spoke with Prime Minister-Elect Philip J Pierre after the victory was clear: “Here we are, we’ve won the government and I intend to be a government for the entire country, a government of inclusion, a government that will listen to people, a government of tolerance and we hope to take this country out of the mire of division and conflict that exists now.”

Pierre said the SLP administration’s first priority would be health and the youth economy.

Pierre spoke on how it felt that he would soon be sworn-in as prime minister having served as acting prime minister under Kenny Anthony: “It’s good to be a life of continued service, we’re going to be continuing serving the people, just serving at another level.”

The Labour Party retained all the seats it had won in the 2016 election: Castries East (Philip J Pierre), Castries South (Ernest Hilaire), Laborie (Alva Baptiste), Vieux Fort South (Kenny Anthony), Vieux Fort North (Moses Jn Baptiste) and Dennery North (Shawn Edward) and picked up an additional seven seats.

Labour picked up: Babonneau (Virginia Albert-Poyotte), Anse-La-Raye/Canaries (Wayne Girard), Soufriere (Emma Hippolyte), Micoud North (Jeremiah Norbert), Castries South East (Joachim Henry), Dennery South (Alfred Prospere) and Gros Islet (Kenson Casimir).

The United Workers Party managed to win in only Micoud South, won by outgoing prime minister Allen Chastanet, and in Choiseul with Bradly Felix.

  1. Thank you St. Lucia for doing the region a huge favour and getting rid of that Uncle Tom sellout of a prime minister. He doesn’t even sound like a St. Lucian

Never trusted Chastanet. His fruit was rotten. Good riddance to the puppet. Thank you people of St. Lucia 👏👏👏

    • Call de election now Top Dawg. Antiguans and Barbudans waiting to get rid of you and your bunch of renegades.

      • Well his advisor Peter Wickham said that it would more advantageous to him to call the election as late as possible since that would give the economy more time to recover from the impact of covid. That being the case I am sure Gaston will be listening to Wickham so we can look forward to an election in 2023. What ever the date however, I hope Antiguans and Barbudans will give him some of the same medicine Chastenet got in St. Lucia.

        • Charles St. Lucians do what we did in 2014. We kicked out Harold and the bunch and gave a landslide victory to ABLP and again in 2018. And we will do it again whenever Gaston is ready. You see we set the trend; we do not follow.

    • CARSON B. I expected that response from you ALP supporters on ANR. I also expect very serious congratulatory remarks from Gaston Browne. Yes, you are all labour parties but that is as far as the comparison goes. Rest assured that just like the St. Lucian electorate gave Chastenet the booth because of their frustration, it will be the same way the Antiguan and Barbudan electorate will give Gaston Browne the booth for their frustration. SLP success in St. Lucia does not automatically mean ALP success in Antigua.

  2. This is a decided move by the people of St. Lucia to move their country to the political left. Wonderful news. The former PM was a Trumper. It’s good he’s outta here.

  3. I think elections around the Caribbean in the next year or two will be decided by how the Governments handled COVID.

  4. @ TABOR and DESERT

I am at a loss why Tabor and DESERT THORN are so excited. Do They realize that is UWP similar to UPP in Antigua that was voted out of
office ?. It shows that LABOUR is very strong in the CARIBBEAN. ABLP will repeat in ANTIGUA and Barbuda. Tabor election will be 2023.

    • ERIC (THE RED) what excitement are you talking about. You have commented on the results of the St. Lucia election results before I did. Just like Chastenet got the booth for his mismanagement of the country, it is the same way Gaston Browne will get his. Yes, election will be in 2023 since Gaston will be on his knees praying and hoping that things will get better and not worse. He therefore needs all the time he can get so the election might be 6 months after the constitutionally due date in March 2023.

  5. What kind of hypocrites we have here, some people hate trump but tolerate Gaston, where trump is for the people of America than Gaston is for the people in this country
