Some members of the opposition Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) and the main opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) are protesting amendments to the Barbuda Land Act.
They are demonstrating outside an ongoing session of Parliament where it is expected that amendments will be tabled.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne said some provisions of the act are unconstitutional and his government intends to change those provisions.
Browne says among the changes to be made is to give Barbudans an option to purchase land on the sister isle while maintaining the communal landholding for those who choose to do so.
BPM leader Trevor Walker called the pending changes to the act “outrageous and insensitive.”
He says the government has not consulted Barbudans on the possible changes.
“As far as I am concerned the international community must confirm now that the Prime Minister and his government (are) after a land grab in Barbuda,” Walker said.
A small protest is also underway in Barbuda outside the Council offices.

Gaston Brown is looking for trouble.. The people of Barbuda has gone through enough … why is it so important to change the land act.. he is NOT EVEN A BARBUDIAN he has know dam rights what’s so ever. He used the good name of Batbuda to deceive money from around the world and if that is not bad enough he is taking what doesn’t belong to him. Why should BARBUDIANS purchase THEIR OWN LAND? If England agrees to this they just help a dictator to destroy a country a people. When your greedy and self serving it is really bad. Even if a symbolic number demonstrated, the international community is watching! Whatever is done here will trigger international reaction. Is the government ready for that? No amount of sweeping under the carpet will hide the bulge and stench of corruption! Just saying!
