OPINION: Sick of All the Nasty Fake Hair on Black Women

51

We are in a crisis in this country and around the globe with the amount of Black women still sporting weave, wig, braid, and all the nasty-ass false hair that I cannot stand to see.

Jesus help me. I hate to see it. For some of these women, everything on them is fake fake fake to blood and bumboclaat. Fake eyelashes, fake eyebrows, fake nails that look like claws, and fake hair. I’m so tired of seeing it. If you throw a bucket of water on some of these women, their whole face will wash off. I swear to Jah.

Black people are still in denial about the true nature of their “preference” for false, straight hair. We know that it is a historical prejudice we built against ourselves in societies across the world as we experienced the racism that was part and parcel of the colonial experience.

We know that lighter skin and straight hair were and are still highly prized attributes in the human body in Black societies, because our opinions are still subtly and subconsciously influenced by these malignant, racialized ideas about human beauty.

To this day, people still use the phrase, “black and ugly” which is to say, that they considered the person they’re referencing unattractive by the mere fact of their dark tone.

It is still more the norm for men to have their hair barbered down to the scalp, than to sport any hair whatsoever. It is still the norm for women to destroy their healthy natural hair with irons and chemicals in an attempt to replicate the appearance of hair in other racial groups.

These are norms we learn as children and simply never question.

God, I hate to see it. Weaves that are unbeweavable. Multicoloured braids that scream, “ghetto”. Yall fingers are sticky with grease from digging in ya unwashed itchy head whole day, but you wouldn’t stop with your foolishness.

Then there’s the hair loss. Hair loss is a deeply painful thing to deal with for men and women but especially for women. It can happen due to genetic factors, or due to conditions or diseases, or due to environmental factors, or due to THE MUTHF*CKIN STRESS THAT SOME WOMEN PUT ON THEIR HAIR EVERY DAMN DAY WITH TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT STYLES OR BRAIDS TIED INTO THEIR SCALPS SO TIGHT THAT IT’S PULLING ON THEIR BRAINS.

Lord, help us. This too is a source of denial – when hair loss or thinning occurs because of the stress placed on the hair, excessive pulling and tension and twisting, or chemical treatments that have had contact with the scalp, women just ignore it. And pretend as if nothing is wrong.

Too many black women are reaching their 40s and 50s and 60s with serious hair damage not caused by any factors other than destructive false hair rituals that have damned their scalps over years. It has to stop. For the love of Black Jesus.

The tragedy, is that when the damage is done, some often have no choice left but to sport false hair, in order to feel comfortable in public. Yet, they go and watch their daughters and grandchildren do the same thing.

We have our girls coming up, and we’re teaching them to perm, press, iron, braid and corn row and cover up their hair with wigs. For what exactly? And we tell ourselves “it’s just a preference” and that it has nothing to do with how we view our features as people of Black African descent.

Women in Brazil and India have a whole industry of growing, cutting, packaging and selling their hair so that Black women in the Caribbean, North America, Europe and Africa can sew it, glue it, weave it, and paste it onto their heads – anything to escape the apparently ugly reality of the kinky afro hair that the God most them claim to believe in, put on their damn heads.

Imagine, we have whole blogs and websites dedicated to advising Black women, whether to choose “real Indian” or “real Brazilian” hair. We buy other people’s hair. Anybody buying our hair????

YOU SEE ANYBODY AT THE GOTDAMN BARBER SHOP PICKING UP BLACK PEOPLE’S HAIR OFF THE GROUND TO SELL IT?? WHY YALL DON’T BUY 100 %  BARBER SHOP FLOOR AFRO HAIR? HMMMMM??

Some of yall have braids that look like you picked up an old rope from your yard and cut it up and stuck it to your damn heads. It NEEDS TO STOP. Yall training yall girl children to hate themselves and not even know it – to feel unsatisfied in their own skin and with their own hair for no other reason than the fact that you passed on your prejudice to them without knowing you had a prejudice. STOP IT.

Some of yall treat the fake straight hair as the holy grail. You break it out for weddings, birthdays, and special occasions – to look your best. Because we have been taught to believe that natural hair can never have be our best.

Some of yall have hairlines in retreat with the damage done by constant tension or chemicals, and are still using the hairs thin hairs in the edge of ya hairline to twist in braids. ARE YOU MAD?

AND JESUS FATHER GOD, don’t get me started on the nasty baby hair /edges trend that they HAVE. Slicking and swirling the thinner hairs in the front into all sorts of ghetto-warrior styles. Puke. It looks disgusting. It is abomination unto God and man. Nasty swirly stupidity making greasy designs on people’s foreheads. Makes me want to vomit. The ***k are you doing?

And why can’t women just sport an afro? Why are the styling standards for women, for natural afro hair so damn high? Seriously. When you ask some women why they ditched their natural hair, they say because it was too much to maintain. But that’s not the truth.

What they really meant to say was, society does not approve of them simply having a simply short or medium, unstyled afro as a day-to-day style. Society expects women with natural hair to rigorously style it into all kinds or plaits and twists and knots and curls and puffs, everyday, and on the days when they can’t be bothered, their women friends tell them, “You’re having a bad hair day.”

So, they just slap some relaxer or some perm on that sucker and call it George. Now society is happy again. Or, they cornrow that sucker down and slap a cap over it, and the hair of some random woman in Calcutta. Now society is happy again.

And then there’s a reluctance to just trim their hair to a short or medium fro. They simply MUST try to grow it out, then complain that it’s too much to care for. That’s because more hair means more maintenance. Just trim your fro and go about your day. Or pull it back in one. Use your head.

And this brings me to another point. The social construct of what is acceptable and not acceptable for Black women’s hair is largely maintained and policed by other Black women. It has virtually nothing to do with men whatsoever.

If fact, women underestimate the number of men who’d prefer to see them with their natural hair as opposed to all the fakery glued on to their scalps. Natural hair women are far more attractive, frankly. They look normal, healthy, and at peace, and not fake and glossy. There’s nothing I love to see more than a healthy head of normal hair on a luscious Black woman.

But women? Oh boy. They compete in the fakery department. Whose hair cost the most? Who got the neatest sew in? Is it 100% Brazilian? Whose hair lady does the best job? Whose edges are looking the best? Yuck.

  1. Dat writer behave like is his money spending yow take a chill pill an live dem woman alone u don’t like it 8 others do

  2. Someone doesn’t want to help maintain their woman I see. Leave the women alone, their hair is their beauty. I.e. it enhances their appearance whether it’s bought or natural. Cheap skate.

  3. I’m more of a natural person but pshhh why is this a bother to you? You don’t like it then suck it up. You have to live with it anywhere you go. It’s not just here. It’s all over the world….so what’s your point on this matter???

  4. Personally, I’m looking forward to someone writing an opinion piece on the MALE ABLP cabinet “dye-head” members … at least the majority of women look good!

Sounds like this was written by a male of the species, however, I could be wrong 😉

  5. Our black african natural hair cant b worn in some work fields first them a tell u its untidy. When a woman is press for time what ever works is that them go do

  6. I HAIR you but at the end of the don’t people do what they want. I am sure you are not a perfect individual. Mek people libba lone. Go arnda grung den if you caan lib wid um.

  7. I wonder was it you who got an idea the first to invent wigs and other hair pieces or your father or mother had the factory and the money sent you to school right up to university to educate yourself. Would you have been making such comments now? I wonder! Men wear wigs also, every industry has a purpose.

  8. Women should have the freedom to do as they please just like men.
Plus I know lots of South East Asian and Caucasian women, men, trans and non-binary people who also wear extensions and wigs. Try living in the world today and not in your tiny narrow minded corner of yesterday.
You are of course entitled to your own opion but your delivery of your opinion is judgemental, misogynistic, disrespectful, and rude. I recommend you take a writing course from an accredited institution before you write something so embarrassing again. I doubt anyone was able to read the whole thing.
Oh and women don’t need a man to validate their appearance. We are just our individual selves and how we choose to carry ourselves is our own business just like your choices are yours.

I can’t believe Antigua still has people like you. Make me not want to come home. I also can’t believe something like this was actually published.

  9. I’m a woman, and I 100% agree. We need to learn to appreciate our natural black beauty, and that includes our kinky hair texture.

    • I am a white woman and agree. Beautiful black women should embrace their natural beauty as should all women. Fake hair extensions, fake nails, fake eyelashes, lip fillers, botox etc all look horrible. Let’s embrace each other and the interesting unique women we are!

    • Agreed @ True! The thing that huts me is that they seem to put on their self esteem with the wig. Learn to love yourself unconditionally!

  10. The writer makes some good points although the bluntness is a bit extreme. Not everyone likes the fake look, but to each their own. At this point in history, I think a person should be able to choose whatever style they personally prefer even if they emulate a different race once it’s for the right reasons and not because they hate themselves. That also goes for white girls choosing black styles. People can wear what they want. He’s right that black women are the ones who criticie other black women’s hair the most. Men don’t care. People of other races don’t care. So, no need to adopt a style to please other women. These days nobody I know really thinks anything bad about dark skin or kinky hair. So, no one should be afraid to wear their God-given natural hair.

  11. Bloodclaat me couldn’t believe a so much you had to say on the topic next time do a video expressing you self & don’t be shy 🙈 let the ladies see the face behind that kinky hair, dark skin, proud black soul, nuh fraid me fren a just women them harmless

  12. Love the way this Terrorist planted a landmine, targeting emotionally-triggered WOMEN to step on it and go boom. 💥😅💥 🤣 💥 😂

  13. Although he’s sharing his opinion it still won’t change anything because people do what the frig they want. He probably uses something with far worse chemicals to make his d*ck work!!

  16. It’s a culture of low esteem inculcated since slavery ,from which they have not recovered, hence the bleaching also.

  17. Let’s lay the facts down, Black women had been wearing and rocking the wigs and weaves for ages. It’s been apart of our culture to dress up and look well as any other. If you have an issue with maintaining your woman, simply you could have just attended to her in private. Nobody cares about your stupidious opinions about US BLACK WOMEN and the things we wear or do!
If your looking for a woman who is natural to the core guh look one rasta owman n tap try papyshow yahself pan da media. If u nah like I’m, shut yah yiye! Women has been doing these things for ages so if a now e a badda u, guh shut yah yiye n mek nearga lone!

    SMH. Nobody cares!

    • You people are so brainwashed with your fake feminist talking points, first of all wearing a weave for months on end affects a woman’s PH balance n her private area, those fake lashes can cause eye irritation, the chemical usted to install the fake nails causes cancer,on the spiritual side wearing other people’s hair that has been sacrificed to idols is one of the reasons some of our sisters are bi polar and have issues in their relationships, they always think that the are right, they never want to listen to good counsel,I love my black sisters, they are beautiful, but that fake wig/ weave culture is,a major setback, what other race suffers such low self esteem and such a strong inferiority complex to wear other peoples hair, the other races are laughing at us,it is a billion dollar industry and our people, are losing money we are not gaining anything but sickness and disease, vanity is the devils favorite sin

    • “maintaining your woman?” Another reason me nuh into the wig business. Some of you all can’t left the waste man cause allyuh need the wig and nail money! Murder!

  18. meanwhile white employers at hotels are telling black people how to wear their hair smh. we are not the same!!!

  19. The author didn’t lie about the balding effect of the weaves. Ladies take warning and be very careful so you don’t end up with fivehead instead of forehead. Not cute at ALL!

  20. I’m a black woman, I love my natural look, my thick curly or should I say coiled (tiny curls) hair, my unpolished nails, the curls of my lashes, the rich Choco look of my skin… I agree with what you said… I wish we all as women can look in the mirror and fall deeply in love with what we see in ourselves. Yes I know society bring us down, however if we work on enhancing our natural self’s we will see the benefits. I won’t say I don’t use braid for protective styles once in a while, but that’s it, I do knw for a fact, if we stop the use of perms and heat on our hair it will be less damaged, avoid putting the glues on our hair line to avoid the thinning that occurs when it’s removed ( I know abt wigs from observation, I do not use wigs ) google natural remedies you can use to help rebuild hair loss, simple things like the juice from onions and rice water or the cloves can’t do miracles… how you put forward your opinion comes off like an attack rather than just bringing it to light… it’s not what you say, is how you say it…

  21. Seems like this dude assumes that women dress themselves so they can please him. The hubris! If you don’t like fake hair, eyelashes and the like, I suggest that you not wear it. Simple

  22. Roger C. Fenton-Charles, this is the new trend and the world is always trending, we can never stop the fake things, just learn to adapt in a society where the majority is fake, even some of them lives is fake, pretend to show off in other people car, tek pic inna big house like a dem own it an car, an hotel like dem live deh….yow bare fakeness inna this world but one thing bredda, just make sure you are real and always keep it 100. God soon come for his faithful few, and those will be the ones keeping it real and true and pure, bless up !

  23. Nighty percent of the women who wear the false hair, DON’T look good. You can see the fakeness from a mile away.. Wearing other people’s hair to enhance their beauty? Which beauty? It’s a slave driven mentality, that you think you are not good enough naturally. No wonder so many sistas are single. The black men go straight for the ‘real’ thing – the white, indian, Korean, Filipino – no funky hair smell, all natural. Can’t pay rough with them, can’t go swimming . Other races making millions off us. I am a natural black woman and agree with the water a million percent.

  24. an article appear online by “Roger C. Fenton-Charles”. People taking it as the real name even giving credit for such disclosure…speaking about brainwashing and quick to accept what is before them can’t be more applicable.

  25. I agree with the writer, the fakery is out of control with us women.
You see the same thing on TV?
With the long hair and the fake eye
    Lashes!
And this has been going on for a long time..
It’s a trend and everyone wants to feel they are part of looking good!
Sometimes though, we look very unattractive, but in our mind we look goood… sad!
What’s going on with the bleaching of the face?
Someone needs to take a look at that?
    Weird🤔🤔
The bleached look is horrible and very unattractive!
    Someone please tell them that.omg!!

  26. @Disappointed-In-Toronto
Clearly you are offended by the writers opinions. If you can’t believe Antigua has people like the writer, then you certainly don’t know Antigua.

BTW: How does going to an accredited college make the writer less opinionated, judgemental, misogynistic, disrespectful, and rude?

Come on back and lean more about our people. My guess is you won’t be disappointed, for you read ANR; and that’s all you need to do to lean about our people.

My late wife was a Eve Saint Laurant show room model: with very short hair, tall, and dark skin. Many thought she was Ethiopian, but she was a Baltimore native.
She was the epitome of beauty with always a fire engine red lipstick, everything else natural.

When you accuse the writer of being opinionated, judgemental, misogynistic, disrespectful; I read shades of “projection” coming from you.

  27. @ Disappointed-In-Toronto

I guess you would consider me judgemental also; if I open a conversation or craft an opinion piece about the large number of women who bleach their skin and how horrendous they look .
One of Toronto’s best IVF doctors vacationed with her partner in Antigua not to long ago. They had lunch at a well known Suchi restaurant on Barbuda and planned to overnight in Barbuda; but was sickened by the smelly hair of the server’s and captain’s hair. The effect cause one partner to become ill and they had to helicopter out that afternoon.

I’d be very disappointed if after waiting 2 weeks to get a reservation at “Scaramouche”, or “Baro” and the Server assigned to my table reeks of smelly rancid hair. As a Toronto resident you should know what I mean.

Life is a bit upside down. One of the Jenner/Kardashians put filler in her lips and made herself a billionaire; while black women were running from naturally thick lips. Now our women wants to look like the Kardashians.

Any of us can slice it and dice it; and its nothing but Low self esteem.

From Paris to Stuttgart, from Bonn to Lyon; the black women are rocking afro and frizzy hair. Many of them being multicultural and multi-ethnic. buts soon as make my way on the Bullet to St Pancras, London; and I see my Caribbean female counterparts; its multi color wigs and dreadlocks down the middle of their backs.

  28. There are some good points made by the author. Some black people do not like their hair or natural features. It is a fair question about why black women seem more inclined to buy so many items to “beautify” themselves. BUT black hair is indeed harder to style. Try running a comb through natural hair and see how that works for you. The person mentioned just putting the hair in one… how easy is it to slip thick natural hair in one? A short afro does not fit every face and there’s nothing wrong with wanting options. The reality is, thick, natural hair can be very difficult to style.
