The short staff issues at the hospital needs to be addressed, along with the issues of management. Am very concerned because am not a big shot who can fly to another country for treatment so I rely on the public hospital for treatment.
I recently experienced 2 different situations on 2 different wards and it’s very concerning. My mother spent a month on surgical ward and through frequent visitations I have observed the extremely shortage of nurses.

I will come in the morning and see a nurse then I will be back at 8 in the night and see the same nurse.
My mom even told me she had to sit in her wet pamper with number 2 in it because someone was dying so the 2 nurses that was working had to rush to that patients room. This is ridiculous, no way a ward with 18 patients should have 2 nurses working. That’s not safe and after speaking with a few nurses I realized they are burnt out and over worked.
I once heard a Manger saying the nurses are always calling in sick or going on sick leave but when someone is over worked, what do you expect the outcome would be? Of course they will get sick at a faster rate. I wonder what the minister of health is doing to correct this issue, this could cause someone their life.
The nurses have a lot on their hands and I have seen nurses working 16 hour shift just to make up for the shortage and I think this can be very dangerous.

This situation needs to be addressed, not to mention an over worked nurse is prone to numerous mistakes. And the public already don’t like nurses so the simplest mistake will be blown out of proportion. My heart goes out to these nurses, this issues need to be fixed.
Another situation I have heard is the managers are telling the nurses when they can or can’t go on vacation which is totally ridiculous. Nurses are already burnt out and they are still being denied Vacation time while other nures who am guessing are friends with upper management, gets to go on vacation numerous times in a year.
This favoritism and unfairness need to stop. When I tell you the unfairness some of these nurses are facing at that hospital and then we wonder why some have this attitude. Mr Joseph hospital management needs a shake up, no one is advocating for the nurses and they are the backbone of our hospital. If there no nurses there is no hospital.

Not to mention some of the nurses are unprofessional, treating patients in an unkind and harsh manner. It is clear that they hate their job as many openly complain about the conditions, in front of patients. Some cannot even speak standard English. Perhaps if they were treated and paid better they would treat sick and vulnerable patients with some dignity.
Nevertheless, the reality is that sometimes we need to reevaluate our situation. If you are unhappy with your job, consider leaving. It is not fair to overwork yourself and to mistreat sick persons just because you hate your job.
Thank you very much for reaching out.We really do appreciate it. At least someone is using their eyes and ears.
But sad to say, sir or madame, nothing is going to be done in regards to you, seeking and pleading for help on the nurses behalf. We have been there so many times and the end result is nurses leaving and the cycle continues
But thanks for the voice.Really do appreciate it
These nurses are so HYPOCRITICAL!!!!! Full of NASTY, SHITTY, HOGGISH, POMPOUS, NASTY, CONDESCENDING, UNPROFESSIONAL, WICKED, BAD Behaviour!!!!!
Always complaining and crying demanding increase in salary, but NO INCREASE IN POSITIVE BEHAVIOR TOWARDS PATIENTS!!!
Too many of them lack KINDNESS, COMPASSION. CARE. THOUGHTFULNESS AND BASIC HUMAN DECENCY.
some of the meanest, rudest set of “professionals” ever!!
If they conducted themselves better and treated the sick and vulnerable with compassion, they would have more support. Many of the nurses act like straight up hood rats.
Maybe if you were a nurse as I am and had to deal with the things we have to on a daily basis you would understand why some of us have an attitude towards the public…… relatives especially, want to tell you how you should do your job now if you soooooooooooo know my job better than I do come do it or better yet do it at home with your relatives to prevent them from coming to the hospital ……,because the last time I checked I’m the trained professional. Some y’all just outta order!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for highlighting some of the struggles that nurses go through. A nurse is human first. We sometimes need to take a step back and assess the entire situation. Sometimes there is a great demand for patient care but minimal resources available. They do their best with the little they have to make others are comfortable and most times these things go unseen. Our nurses are also leaving Antigua and that is because they feel appreciated elsewhere. Give the nurses the respect they deserve.
When you see a nurse, please know that:
She’s overworked.
Under paid.
Picks up extra shifts to cover a short shift.
Leaves her family behind to ensure that your family member is taken care of.
Her professional life overrides her personal life
Plus many more.

This is the True reality the minister of health has never dealt with, instead he has been extending the hospital( which is good):but where are the workers to compensate? The article is correct most nurses are intimidated daily to do jobs that needs more staff while Managers Supervisors walk around gossiping the young nurses instead of helping them, they criticize them, clock in and leave for private work getting full pay.
Most of the nurses are still young fresh out of nursing and they need guidance.
Earlier we were thought to work with seniors who would help the younger ones know a proper care plan. They are all gone, they treated the nurses horrible till up to today nurses are resigning.Yes they are still leaving.
The rule is if you are not happy resign.
The Management in general is not confidential, they rule by favoritism putting foreigners before their own.
These foreigners ( namely Africans,Jamaicans vincentians ) after getting special privilege resign an go to England and Canada all over and leave us Antiguans ( in general a citizen)picking up the slack.
Imagine having to feed at least 10 patients at 12,two nurses maybe 1 nursing assistant if that much.
Now everyone in there looks out for themselves, so the nurse will focus on medication only allowing the assistant to handle the feeding tidying and other things by themselves.Because she has to focus on the 1st most important her meds( for proper healing).
According to who you work with you have a good shift.
Now there are some nurses by the look of it has no sort of dedication they came to make money and leave
Dem set ya Jesus a the rudest set you have in the hospital, vile nasty and piggish.wicked some of them how they talk to patients is ridiculous, embarrassing.
Some visitors can be very rude also but we should always hold composure
Some nurse they hate when people ask simple questions like details to a prescribed med.
Most people left in Sir Lester are family of management brother sister politics helped them
What does Antigua expect
I have working there for more than 8years and it is the most toxic environment I have ever worked in my entire life
That place is a different cut place
The things that I have seen Lord knows but Molwyn more care about getting a picture at the front newly built price He does not care point blank.
Now them go bring a whole new set of workers, paying them big money Managers ceos all kinda people and cannot pay on time.
Plus the million and one elders on the Sir Lester bird board.
SMH
Me convinced change nar come
