In recent days, there has been increasing chatter about leadership within the United Progressive Party (UPP).

Some supporters and commentators have floated names like Richard Lewis and even Harold Lovell as potential new leaders, sparking unnecessary speculation and contributing to a sense of confusion within the party.

These conversations, while possibly well-intentioned, ignore a critical truth: Jamale Pringle is the duly elected leader of the UPP, and he deserves a fair chance to lead.

Let’s not forget that both Pringle and Chairman Gisele Isaac were chosen by the party through democratic elections at the convention.

Whether or not everyone agrees with their leadership style, they won their respective positions through the will of the delegates.

That matters. Democracy must be respected, especially within our own ranks. They moved delegates around to win the convention, just like any other constituency branch.

That’s the usual in all our conventions.

Yes, Jamale Pringle is young and still learning.

He may not be perfect—no leader is—but he brings valuable experience to the role.

He spent five years as the sole opposition voice in Parliament, standing alone for the UPP when others stepped aside.

That kind of resilience and dedication counts for something.

He now has a team around him, including a seasoned chairman in Gisele Isaac, and he should be allowed to grow into his role with Isaac’s guidance.

Critics have also pointed fingers at Pringle’s recent actions, but the reality is that every new leader faces a learning curve.

Instead of tearing him down, the party and its supporters should rally around him. Constructive criticism is necessary—but so is support and party loyalty.

As for the calls for Harold Lovell’s return—there is no denying Lovell’s contribution to the party and to Antigua and Barbuda. But his time has passed. We must look to the future, not the past.

Richard Lewis, too, has had opportunities to lead, but he is hardly the people’s choice, especially when compared to Pringle’s relatability and grassroots appeal.

Ironically, Lewis may be even less accessible to the public than Chairman Isaac, who herself faces criticism for not being the most “people-friendly” leader.

And then there’s the daily commentary on radio, with individuals like Dane Knight attacking Pringle and even discussing monies he made.

It raises the question: is this about genuine concern, or is it simple jealousy? Jamale Pringle is a young man who worked hard to get where he is.

He didn’t inherit the party; he did not exploit the elderly for their fortune—he earned his role through perseverance, dedication, and the trust of the people of All Saints East and St. Luke.

They voted for him, and they deserve to have their choice respected.

The UPP must not fall into the trap of undermining its own leadership from within.

Unity is strength, and right now, the best way forward is to support Jamale Pringle and allow him the opportunity to prove himself.

The next general election will come soon enough. Until then, let’s give him the chance he has rightfully earned.

  1. The issue is one of sense and pragmatism. Can Pringle inspire the vast majority of the electorate to vote for the UPP? I say that it is clear he cannot. Him winning his seat is not the same thing as him becoming the Prime Minister. Ask yourself the question why is it that no one would question whether Harold Lovell would be competent as a Prime Minister but they would question that Pringle would be? That in a nutshell is the conundrum that the UPP finds itself in. Pringle is not the best leader to take the UPP forward. For all the narrow minded and selfish UPP supporters looking at their own self-interest such as Gisele Issac, the results of the next general elections will provide the answer once and for all. Yes because of circumstances Pringle happen to end up where he is now, however, that does not make him the best leader for the Party

  2. I may not agree with his politics, but give the man a fair chance. Respect the voters’ choice.

  3. Leave Pringle alone and you snakes try and work on you all constituencies pray that you all of you regain aryo seats which I doubt will happen , modern day Judas aryo be , Pringle seat is sure a 3rd term in office while most of you is just one poorly represented 5 years . Pringle you are like Moses you will lead the people through the promise land .

  4. Who owns Antigua News Room? Is it a fact that it is now owned and operated by a PEP= Politically Exposed Person?

  5. The HON. JAMALE PRINGLE is the ONLY DULY ELECTED Leader of the UPP. No FOREIGN entity or yardie influence can topple him!!!

  6. 5 years as a lone opposition in Parliament…? Trevor Walker …the UPP has no regards for you…even though you were there babysitting Pringle….not a drum was heard. You should chosen as leader of the opposition during Pringle first 5 baby stage….ah warn you…you are not a member of the UPP and will never be…they will ate and spit you out.

  7. A CHANCE TO DO WHAT? Learn how to lead ? At this time? Have you looked at the leaders emerging and what they are capable of?
    Damn jokers aryuh be.

  8. Right now, the UPP does not need a trainee leader. At his age, there are things he either knows or doesn’t know. There are things he should know, but doesn’t.
Is he the man to go up against Gaston Browne, a man he says he admires? Will he be a good leader as long as he has the ventriloquist in his ear? The same one who has no patience nor any care for the common folk?
You cannot make a man a leader just to give him a chance because he was there long time. You cannot make a man a leader in today’s world who does not understand geopolitics nor is able to take his place among seasoned leaders.

Because you like him as a person does not mean he should be leader, especially of a party whose back is against the wall, has no sponsors and will not get any as long as he is the leader. America has a man who by all that is normal or sensible, should not be its leader. They will know chaos until they decide they’ve had enough and get rid of him. Antigua has one like him, but Antigua has nothing to fall back on. We will all catch our nenen because there will be no alternative.

No, sir, Pringle is not your man.

  9. @ No Sir. Pringle is not your man you could not have said it better and clearer. What wisdom. The UPP needs to understand what you have said before it is too late. However, I believe it is too late already because I cannot see them making any fundamental changes especially in the leadership. Who nah hear will feel.

  10. Jamale Pringle embodies the resilient, people-centered leadership that Antigua and Barbuda urgently needs at this time. Unlike Prime Minister Gaston Browne, whose tenure has been marred by allegations of ethical lapses and a growing disconnect from grassroots concerns, Pringle has consistently demonstrated integrity and a commitment to democratic principles. Serving as the sole opposition voice in Parliament for five years, he upheld the values of accountability and transparency, even when isolated, a testament to his dedication and courage. His recent election as UPP leader, defeating Richard Lewis with a clear majority, underscores the party’s confidence in his vision and leadership, many antiguans share this view. While Browne’s administration has faced criticism over increased cost of living and declining public confidence, Pringle offers a fresh, untainted alternative focused on inclusive governance and genuine public engagement. As Antigua and Barbuda stands at a political crossroads, Pringle’s authentic leadership and unwavering commitment to the people’s welfare position him as the superior choice to guide the nation forward.

  11. Just stop say Jamal Pringle was the duly elected leader at the convention, because constituency branch meetings preceding that convention, delegates was infantilized and talk down to, that what instructions or opinion the branch head have is what all these right thinking independent individual must agree with, and even at the convention efforts was made to move in the elderly approaching on senility to come vote for a leader, and you know they just need someone to tell them what to do, none of the young people was behind Pringle as any leader, because we saw his incapacity in parliament and throughout the media, where he said he loved Gaston administrative skills of taking the bull by the horns, instead a Pringle recognize dictatorship ,he celebrating it on daren ward show.
Problem is the balkanization of Richard Lewis cannot now turn around and then romanticize him as leader when the chair person herself was part of such shameful and cowardly actions, the upp has shoot itself in the foot or they secretly working for the one rich Syrian family that control Gaston and the ALP , and through lucrative contracts like power generation has achieve a state capture of all civil servant and police and judiciary all because Gaston acted immaturely in giving that power supply contract that the hon. Baldwin Spencer saw as a national security threat to the nation. The upp better heal the wounds it foisted on it’s better soldier in Richard Lewis and others, Sherfield Bowen should have stood his ground upon the letter of support for lewis, because he is the next and most capable person their on the upp team surpassing Richard Lewis but lack historical longevity. For Sherfield to go through all he been through and came back and sweep the political landscape is saying he has a following and capacity.

  12. # Very concerned national are you in your right mind when you say MANY ANTIGUANS SHARES THE UPP’S CONFIDENCE OF PRINGLE’S VISION AND LEADERSHIP. You obviously live on Mars or some other planet.

    .

  13. A laboRAT seeking to dictate what happens in the UPP.
Is there unease within the labour party that their planted leader may be ousted????
    I can tell…..
Give Pringle a chance to do what?
Hasn’t he done enough damage to the UPP?
LaboRATs are smiling from ear to ear……
    Learning is beyond Pringle….
A fool doesn’t know that he is a fool. …..
So to does Pringle not see the damage he has done and is doing to the UPP……….
Only Jesus will convince me that what is happening to the UPP is not deliberate on the part of the leader and his chair…….
One must know when he/she is not wanted somewhere to leave quietly and unnoticed.
