OPINION: Burton’s Historic Cooperation with ALP Resurfaces in Airport Naming Controversy

4

Comrades ALL. I have read the comments and the different thoughts about the airport naming.

Some are saying/ wondering why Burton name is suggested.

Here’s my take:

I don’t think that it’s any contribution Burton made as far as the airport is concerned.

I believe it’s because of his past involvement and co-operation with the ALP in the past.

For those who do not know, some years ago the ALP won all 16 seats in Antigua ( VC Bird was leader) and Burton won the seat in Barbuda.

He was the lone opposition in the house, and consequently was made LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION!

However, despite his position as leader of the opposition, he worked in unison with the government to bring about a change in Barbuda.

He was strongly opposed by the BPM, but held to his conviction that working with the government was the only way forward.

People in Barbuda were duped by Hilbourne Frank and the BPM to say that Burton betrayed Barbuda.

Even some who opposed then (myself included) have come to understand that Burton was absolutely correct.

I therefore believe that it was for his co-operation and foresight in the past ….. that has now come full circle, that the government is seeking to honor his efforts.

MY HUMBLE OPINION.

Rueben James.

NO ONE of Barbudian lineage have contributed to or Serve The Barbudian People with dustinction as Those Three Barbudian Icons. Nubbs ans Burton can’t Tie Fu Them Dea Shoe Lace far mire Polish Them Shoseee …!!! The Trurh Hurts and MUST Be Told.

  2. Yes it is !
Tell me something about Barbuda that is not controversial.
    Both sides are deeply flawed.
One side says: Barbuda needs development. Eric Burton was among them. One of the most interesting things about him: he was a hard working entrepreneur who employed many locals and exported his products.
He never depended on the Government. He worked the land as well as being a pioneer of lobster exportation, as well as retail food shop owner.
The other side says: We need to go our own way. They were power hungry and remain power hungry. After 80 years how many home grown businesses have they started or mentioned. How many civic groups have they formed. It’s all about chicken little political power and the personal financial benefits.
What has the current chairman of the BPM done?m to nake Barbuda better? What practical ideas have he presented.
I’m not a supporter of the airport in question. Mrs Mandela closed down the KClub when she could not get approval for a KClub airport. Compliments of the current Member of Parliament.
Coco Point in the other hand closed down their airport. That action proves Barbuda does not need a new apartheid airport.
Unfortunately the people who present themselves as advocates for Barbuda are in bed with the Prime Minister.
There is much more to be told.

  3. @J’aime. New apartheid airport… You really should be careful loosely throwing around the term “apartheid” to describe anything in A&B. It makes you and anyone else using it look really fucking stupid.
