Operation Derelict Starts In St. John’s Area And Villages In The Rural West Community

The Ministry of Health’s clean-up of derelict and abandoned vehicles has now moved to District 2 which includes St. John’s and villages in the Rural West Community to include Grays-Green, Golden Grove New Extension, Donovans and Denfields.

On Monday, the litter-control and prevention wardens, along with other stakeholders, such as the Police and the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), were in the Five Islands area, where several vehicles were marked for removal.

Subsequently, the team moved to the areas of Hatton and Donovans on Tuesday, February 11. According to reports, several cars, trucks, buses, vans, chassis and even boats were identified and marked for pick up.

If, after two weeks, the owners do not secure and remove these items from public roads and property, they will be taken to the Cooks Sanitary Landfill.

The Government began this initiative on February 3, starting in the Old Road community, from which several derelict and abandoned vehicles have since been removed.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has reported that persons are responding positively to the nation-wide clean-up exercise.

However, those persons who object to the removal of their property must immediately indicate to the authorities “a sound reason why the vehicle should not be removed, and also demonstrate capacity to store the vehicle on their private property in a manner not to create any public-health risk – harbouring rodents, rats and mosquitoes,” the Ministry says.

Persons who need assistance in removing a derelict vehicle from their private property may contact the NSWMA’s hotline at 562-1347 or the Litter Wardens Hotline at 727-2467.

The country has been divided into a number of districts in order to achieve efficiency in carrying out the exercise.

District 1 consists of villages to the southern side of the island, from Old Road to Bendals and Bathlodge, Cashew Hill, All Saints Road to Creekside.

District 2 includes St. John’s and villages in the Rural West Community to include Grays-Green, Golden Grove New Extension, Donovans and Denfields; while District 3 encompasses Freetown, Newfield, and Seatons running to Scott’s Hill.
