The government has poured cold water on efforts by the Barbuda Council to repair the Holy Trinity Primary School which was destroyed by Hurricane Irma last year.

According to the Cabinet, the strength of the walls was compromised when the roof of building being repaired was blown.

“Cabinet advises that even after replacing the roof, the building will still be unsafe for occupancy by children,” a brief statement said.

It added that “the Cabinet advises against holding classes in the re-roofed Holy Trinity School Building.”

A new primary school is to be built near to the Sir McChesney George Secondary School, compliments of the Dominican Republic.

Two new wooden classrooms are also to be constructed on the grounds of the Sir McChesney George School.

But the BMP led Barbuda Council says the temporary classroom are not only being constructed too slowly but are too small to accommodate the number of students.

They have taken matters into their own hands by doing the roof repairs on the damaged school themselves.
