Deqan, a teenager who tragically died in a Nut Grove fire in 2022, was one of six unclaimed bodies buried at New Winthropes Burial Ground by the Central Board of Health.
The pain of losing a loved one is already immense, and the inability to afford a proper funeral adds another layer of heartbreak.
These six bodies had been at Barnes Funeral Home since 2022, awaiting family claims. However, with no one coming forward, the Central Board of Health had to bury them in a mass grave after receiving court approval.
Unclaimed bodies in Antigua and Barbuda have long been an issue due to financial constraints faced by families.
While it’s a heartbreaking decision, families deserve the peace of mind that their loved ones are buried with dignity.
Unfortunately, Deqan and the others were laid to rest without a ceremony or the usual respects of a proper funeral.
For Deqan’s family, who waited over 11 months for results from an overseas laboratory, saying goodbye in such a tragic and undignified manner is particularly painful.

People cannot pay for funerals because of the expense!!! Not everyone in this country live above the poverty levels!!!
The Government should use some CIP money and assist with financing the much needed Crematorium . Funerals are ridiculously expensive, the least expensive coffin is at lease $7000.00 . Something has to be done
I would rather my tax money go towards keeping unclaimed bodies of our people rather than a multimillion dollar Russian yacht. Why don’t they tow it out to sea and sink it ?

Its a matter of priority as to where you all spend your money. No problems paying $300 and upwards to attend fetes but we then come with the beggy and poor man mentality for government to meet everything else.

Casket?? Hell no $7000 is the bare minimum wooden COFFIN ah CASKET could run you up to 30k mi love. But they throw in the limo for good measure 🥴. You go online even Amazon and a casket could be as low as $1000us but guess what you have to fight tooth and nail for it to be imported. What a place smh please just throw me to the sea I’ve always had a deep love for the ocean anyway 🙏🏾
