North Street location of cruise-port post has become a smelly health hazard, Wehner says, on account of drainage

REAL NEWS – A potential health hazard is being created at one of the Antigua Cruise Port terminals –at the lower Newgate Street section, just opposite the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union building.

REAL News correspondent George Wehner has recorded the state of the area, which he describes as a health disaster waiting to happen if not rectified immediately.

He also reported that a putrid odour – akin to the smell of a pig pen – is emanating from the vicinity of the entry/exist post, which reportedly is used when cruise vessels are home-porting.

Wehner recalls that, in 2022, the cruise agency extended its perimeter fence – taking up a portion of the road shoulder that had been used for parking – and this has forced motorists to seek alternative arrangements.

In extending the fence, it appears that no proper arrangement had been made for drainage, and so rainfall has been accumulating in the fenced-in area, and the water has become murky and stagnant.

Compounding the matter is that mangoes from a nearby tree have fallen into the water and have fermented, causing the terrible odour.

Accordingly, Wehner concludes that the extension of the compound was done in haste and without proper planning.

Wehner is calling on the Antigua Cruise Port to clean up the area, which has become a breeding ground for vectors.

He says also that the issue is causing St. John’s to become smelly.

Where are they getting water? Do they carry a supply or fill up in port? Just asking ……..

  6. Please read Gaston’s invocation the graduates of Oxford University.
He said we are already an economic powerhouse. Don’t take my word; read it for yourselves.
This is what an economic power house smells like.

    • The authorities need to detain him and administer his medication. Only a lunatic would make such comments in such circumstance.

Are you saying if we can live with the unfinished car park; then we should live with the conditions at the Port? That’s not how legacy is determined. The current condition and eventual outcome of CAR PARK at East Bus station is under ABLPs watch. That will be the legacy.
Deflect deflect is not a solution. Extend your concerns for a clean and environmentally healthy state to all of Antigua and Barbuda. Especially in view of the fact that the PM is abroad making a case that we are environmentally vulnerable and need help in getting debt forgiveness.
