NODS Official Urges Public to Take Earthquake Preparedness Seriously

A representative from the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) is calling on residents to prioritize earthquake preparedness, stressing that a major earthquake could strike the region at any time.

Speaking during an interview, the NODS official highlighted the increased awareness around seismic activity, noting that while recent changes at the UWI Seismic Research Center have led to more reports of smaller earthquakes, the threat of a major quake remains very real.

“We encourage everyone to be prepared,” the official said, urging workplaces, schools, and households to develop and practice earthquake plans. “Secure heavy items, bolt bookshelves, and make sure your building complies with safety codes,” they advised.

NODS is also working closely with various organizations to conduct earthquake drills, and the official emphasized the importance of participating in these exercises. “Drills save lives. If you don’t know what to do during an earthquake, your chances of survival drop,” they added.

For assistance with preparedness or to conduct drills, the public is encouraged to contact NODS. The office also maintains active social media channels, where updates on disaster preparedness are regularly posted.

NODS can be reached at 462-4206 for more information on how to prepare for earthquakes and other hazards.
