There will be no early release of prisoners due to the COVID-19 pandemic, officials have said.
Prison authorities across the region moved to release prisoners in a bid to reduce over crowding in light of COVID-19 pandemic.
Superintendent of Prison, Lt. Col. Eugene Phillip, said “there’s been no official policy directive on the matter and while there have been discussions among the prison
chiefs there’s been no decision on the matter. In fact, most prison superintendents are against the suggestion for a number of very good reasons,” he disclosed.
There are 285 inmates at Her Majesty’s Prison. Earlier in the year the government decided that prisoners on remand will going forward be housed at the Sir Wright George lockup but it is not clear whether this has been implemented.
Since the outbreak, protocols have been put in place to reduce the possibility of COVID-19 at the prison including placing restrictions on visitation and bringing of food from outside.
Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti are among countries who have released prisoners early as a result of COVID-19.

There should be NO release until the guilty have served their time in full. Yes, there is overcrowding, but if all of the killers there had been sentenced to the ultimate punishment for murder, (“hanging by the neck until dead”) there’d be lots of room in 1735.
I thought that they were going to release those with minor crimes like for small portion of Marijuana offense.
