No Bad Blood- PM Defends Absence Of Heads From OECS Meeting

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says there is no tension brewing among the OECS Heads of Government who were absent for last week’s meeting in Antigua.

The prime minister’s of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Ralph Gonsalves and Grenada were not present for the meeting.

“Ralph Gonsalves and Keith Mitchell as far as I am concerned, they are two senior statesmen, they have been the vanguard of the OECS for the last 30 years and I don’t think that anyone should be offended if they miss a few meetings,” he said.

He added that “the expectations for these two to go to all the meetings would be unreasonable.”

He acknowledged that “part of the problem we have within the OECS is that the heads seem to prioritise other meetings over that of the OECS and that might be something that we need to address.”

But the prime minister said despite their differences at times the work of the  OECS must go on.

“Heads will always have differences but we remain friends, you would recognise that even though I was critical of Allan Chastenet he came to the OECS meeting.”

The prime minister was making reference to Chastenet’s position on Venezuela.

“But I think the Prime minister of St Lucia understands that its not a personal issue and we remain, friends, just a difference of position.

He respects my opinion and I respect him, to some extent, on that issue”

Browne said he hoped his explanation would put an end to the speculation.

“I know there was some speculation by a few people that perhaps the few heads were not present that this may have signalled some level of tension between myself and them there is none.”

  1. Maturity and I think this is commendable. Many of us need to show similar maturity. I have the greatest respect for PM Browne but when I think his stance on certain issues are bad, I say it. I get hammered by some in this forum but I have nothing personal against the PM or his government as some might think. I would forever be a voice of reason for as long as I live………
