Nine additional families have received the keys to their newly rehabilitated homes on 6 August 2021 under Phase 2 of the Housing Support to Barbuda Project led Government of Antigua and Barbuda and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) thanks to the critical support of the European Union (EU).

The 9 homes are part of 84 homes to be provided in the final stage of the €5 million-euro project to repair and rebuild homes that were either destroyed or severely damaged during the passage of Hurricane Irma in September 2017.

These 9 new homes have been rehabilitated following UNDP’s Building Forward Better Principles and takes into consideration the Build Back Better techniques.

Blondelle Deazle, one of the beneficiaries noted, “This is a good project because, to be honest, I could not have rebuilt this home on my own. I am so thankful for the EU, UNDP and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda”.

This project is in line with UNDP Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean’s mission to build a more resilient region, Valerie Cliff, Resident Representative for UNDP Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean explained, “Achieving sustainable development in the region is predicated on ensuring that all communities are resilient and can withstand inevitable shocks and crises.

As part of UNDP’s Build Forward Better mandate we are promoting disaster-resilient communities and we are proud to partner with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the European Union to support recovery in Barbuda.”

Speaking on behalf of the EU, Ambassador Malgorzata Wasilewska noted, “This is one more step in the support of the European Union to the vulnerable population of Barbuda. A new milestone that shows the way for adaptation solutions in the case of new natural events.

Indeed, the rehabilitated homes strictly follow the safety protocols of the Antigua and Barbuda building codes (aligned with the Build Back Better techniques), making clear the commitment of the European Union in the partnership with the Government towards a more resilient housing stock.
