After Five Years, ABLP Says The Plan To Fix MSJMC Has Worked

The ruling Antigua Barbuda Labour Party has reported on its first five years in office by highlighting what it sees as some of its accomplishments.

The party released a list of consisting 25 areas of development.

A major item on the list is the Mount St. John Medical Center with the government proclaiming that “Plan To Fix MSJMC has worked.”

The Gaston Browne government claims it stocked the hospital with medicines and supplies.

It said $30 million dollars of new diagnostic equipment purchased; six successful kidney transplant operations were conducted there.

“Other medical procedures privately available in Antigua were introduced at MSJMC when they were not before; an ophthalmologist has been hired, and there are doctors available with regularity.,” the ABLP administration said.

The ABLP said Dr. Duncan and the new team, hired by the Board of MSJMC, have turned the performance level of the MSJMC around dramatically.  

Other areas highlighted were improvements to  Citizenship By Investment Programme (CIP), the establishment of a UWI Campus.

“The promise to attract more than US$1 billion in investments in 5 years has been surpassed,” was also highlighted.

In 2014, Gaston Browne led the ALBP to a massive victory at the polls, that success was repeated again in 2017.

  1. If it’s so successful as you claim, why are MPs not using the service and opting to fly to other countries for routine treatment?. Operations on patients which have presented more complications than the initial ailments. Why are patients still dying from infections that are eradicated by simple inhouse hygiene measures?. I hear there were talks to build some 5 star medical facility hotel to attract international patients?…you must be crazy if you think millionaires or those who can afford it will be flying into bedlum & bacteria to be touched by butchers!!.

    • Can you dispute the facts that MSJC is much better than it was before June 2014. It is not perfect as yet. Because that is still a work in progress. But big progress has been made. Even if you just look at the many persons that are now receiving treatment for dialysis. And eye care. Not to mention the kidney transplantation that were done right here. Teco Lake didn’t fly overseas for that.

  2. The People’s Government is to be congratulated. The country is moving forward under principled leadership whose ideology is based in the social democratic philosophy of our founders. The Prime Minister’s commitment to “entrepreneural socialism” is a work in progress, but well on the way. His vision is very close to that of our National Hero and Founder, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, deeply rooted in labour, social democracy and Black democratic socialism. The Nation is moving ever forward. May the red flag of our national founders continue to fly proudly over this beautiful land. This is truly a People’s Government. Thank you.

  3. That is why sick people have to wait hours and even days to see a doctor at MSJMC? Every day sick people wait hours upon hours for medical attention and then leave the hospital without ever seeing a doctor.

  5. @ Alex Deazle – You hit the nail on the head, even for a simple check up these ministers and family fly out to new york and miami (not Venezuela mark you) so they never have to live with the policy decisions they make.

    Nobody can mark their own examination papers like alp. talk about patting themselves on the back. why dont they ask the clients of msjmc to grade the performance of the hospital

    • I’m not saying the Doctors/nurses and support staff are not doing their very best,but there’s only so much you can do with limited resources. GOAB should be pouring millions into MSJ annually to get it upto and maintain a rival standard. Personally I feel that one hospital to service the size of Antigua is not enough. A second one should be built on the other side of the island for the population to also attend, maybe even a few satellite “quick clinics” for minor but not life threatening injuries?. They must think it’s only rich people get sick.
