There is an urgent need for new burial sites as cemeteries across the region approach full capacity.
Chief Health Inspector Sharon Martin highlighted the issue, noting that many cemeteries are running out of space, with some able to accommodate only a few more burials.

The problem is exacerbated by the high number of weekly burials, with Lambert Cemetery alone seeing around ten burials per week.
Communities and churches are strictly enforcing burial rights, only permitting burials of residents in their designated plots. This practice has led to conflicts and further reduced available burial spaces.
During a recent post-cabinet briefing, Ambassador Lionel Hurst from the Prime Minister’s office acknowledged the issue, indicating that the new Tolton Cemetery is nearing readiness. However, delays in its opening have put additional strain on existing sites.
Martin emphasized the need for swift government action to establish new burial sites and ensure that communities have adequate space for their deceased loved ones.
