The new Netherlands Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, Cornelis Hersback, met with Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Foreign Affairs Minister E.P Chet Greene in St. John’s to discuss key matters impacting the relationship between the Caribbean nation and the European Union.

During separate meetings, Ambassador Hersback presented his credentials to both officials. The discussions focused on Antigua and Barbuda’s recent blacklisting by the EU due to tax compliance issues, with Minister Greene highlighting how this affects investment and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Browne stressed the importance of Citizenship by Investment Programmes (CIPs) to the country’s economy and urged collaboration with the EU to address concerns about the programmes’ assessments and their contribution to non-tax revenue.

He also emphasized the need for a more cooperative approach between small nations and larger economies regarding financial regulations and development goals.
