The Cancer Center of Antigua and Barbuda is set to receive state-of-the-art radiation therapy equipment within the next 60 days, according to Prime Minister Gaston Browne.
The upgrade is expected to enhance cancer treatment services and provide more advanced care for patients in the country.
During a recent interview on Pointe FM, Browne confirmed that the new medical equipment has been purchased and is on its way.
However, he noted that the government is facing legal challenges in removing the old radiation equipment, as its previous owners have refused to cooperate.
“We have written to the former owners asking them to remove the equipment, but they have not responded. As a result, we have taken the matter to court for permission to remove it ourselves,” Browne explained.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will assist in the safe disposal of the old radiation machine to prevent any potential radiation leakage. Browne assured the public that all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure a safe transition to the new system.
The upgraded facility is expected to significantly improve cancer treatment in Antigua and Barbuda, reducing the need for patients to seek radiation therapy abroad.
The government has emphasized its commitment to expanding healthcare services, with additional projects, including a new renal center and a proposed cardiac unit, currently in development.
