Two years after construction started, Prime Minister Gaston Browne is reporting that the Barbuda Airport will be completed by June, 2020.
“We will complete the new Barbuda Airport by June of this year the latest and that will be completed at a cost of $55 million,” Browne told his radio show.
The project commenced in February of 2017 but was halted for several months by an injunction brought against its construction by concerned Barbudan citizens.
The islanders complain that the work to bulldoze forests in preparation for the construction work got under way when residents were evacuated from the island during Hurricane Irma.
The lifting of the injunction meant that worked resumed but not before considerable delay.
It is hoped that the new airport will serve at least two major resorts expected to be constructed in Barbuda in 2020.
The company carrying out the works is Bahamas Hot Mix, the same company in charge of building the Friars Hill and Airport Road projects.
