Neighbourhood watch group condemns casual gunplay

(PRESS RELEASE)

The members of the executive of the National Coalition of Neighbourhood Watches (NCNW) are alarmed at recently receiving a report of gunfire from one of our member neighbourhoods, Mt Pleasant.

At around midnight on Wednesday, 11 October 2017, residents of Mt Pleasant were startled and frightened by chanting, immediately followed by gunfire. The latter was heard by others in the neighbouring Langford’s community which was also reported to us.

We have subsequently learned that the gunfire appeared to have been the finale to a birthday celebration.

We register our absolute condemnation of such reckless and illegal behavior by some members in our community. It also constitutes un-neighbourly conduct in a quiet community. Further, the very act strikes terror in the hearts of homeowners, who have been the victims of robberies and home invasions, and is a breach of trust.

Gun owners must be immediately warned to desist from frivolous discharge of firearms. Such acts are illegal and persons engaging in such dangerous behavior must be threatened with further action by the law enforcement authorities. This behavior must not be tolerated and needs urgent attention. We have immediately notified the authorities about our displeasure.

How are residents (or even the police) able to decipher what is crime and what is play? Gun ownership comes with serious responsibilities and clear instructions of use. This dangerous behavior needs to be stopped immediately. Simply accepting casual gun shots in a neighbourhood puts us on the dangerous precipice of a breakdown of law and order.

We must do better as we partner with law enforcement to improve our safety and security as communities and as a nation.  All residents across the country are asked to join our voices in objecting to and condemning such mindless acts.
