National Student Council of Antigua and Barbuda
“Repraesentatio, Advocatio et Mobilitas”
Call for Decency, Dialogue, and Swift Resolution in Ongoing Teachers’ Industrial Action
The National Student Council of Antigua and Barbuda expresses deep concern over the ongoing industrial action by the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers, which began on May 2, 2025, during a critical time in the academic year.
As students across the nation prepare for end-of-year assessments and examinations, the continued withholding of teachers’ services is having a
significant negative impact on our education, well-being, and academic outcomes.
We recognize the grievances expressed by the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers, particularly regarding outstanding allowances and unresolved issues from the Collective
Bargaining Agreement. At the same time, we note the rising public tensions, including multiple verbal attacks by the Honourable Prime Minister on the Union, its President, and the teaching profession as a whole.
At this moment, we make the following urgent appeals:
- To the Government of Antigua and Barbuda – We urge the Ministry of Education and the Government to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves by prioritizing
respectful and meaningful dialogue with the Union. Furthermore, we call for the
implementation of stronger administrative and management practices within the Ministry to prevent the recurrence of these issues.
- To the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers – We acknowledge your right to
protest and fight for fair treatment. However, we ask that as you continue to advocate for yourselves, you also consider the position of the thousands of students who are missing valuable classroom time and whose future depends on the outcomes of this term.
- To Both Parties – The students of Antigua and Barbuda must not be casualties in this dispute. We implore both sides to place the best interests of the nation’s children at the forefront and move swiftly toward a resolution that allows teachers to return to the classroom and students to resume learning without further delay.
We call for decency, dialogue, and compassion in all communications and actions going
forward. Let us remember that the goal of education is not only the advancement of knowledge but the protection of our nation’s future.

The very thing that adults expects of children, they cannot find it within themselves to do…… meaningful conversation and dialogue. Government and teachers behaving like warring countries. Talk and cuss each other on social media and radio but wouldn’t sit down and thrash out things. Even Putin and Zelensky planning to meet and talk in Turkey this week.
This strike is hurting everyone. Time to sit down and sort it out. Come on Browne
I admire how respectfully the Council made their appeal.
Support to all the students speaking out—you’re doing the right thing.
Maybe the government and teachers will listen now that students are involved.
Students just want to learn. The adults need to do better.
The dialogue and unnecessary jabs on both sides are not welcoming to a fruitful outcome. Even though I’m not happy with the PM’s response, I’m fully aware, and it’s obvious that the union heads are utilizing a great degree of political tactic to arm wrestle the ministry, thus embarrassing the government.
This is sad as most of the teachers were educated on a tertiary level with full scholarships by the government.
They are shirking their responsibilities to the student population of our country in the process. These are teachers. So, where are the real educators?
Dave Ray I understand and reviewed your opinion, but the way I see you are the one political. Just as you gave your views concerning the Teacher’s Union Boss being politically I find it strange that you said you not happy with the PM’s response, what didn’t you give your reason (s) for not being happy just like you pounded on the Union’s boss! It’s better to give an independence view /opinion instead of being politically bias. Don’t get me wrong I respect your opinion but make it be balance and not be afraid to speak.
@Independent
With all due respect, you or no one will decide how I respond to any subject matter. I see it from my vantage point, as you see it from yours. It’s called democracy, not fairness. Beinh fair is subjective, while democracy is a difference in thought processes.
