National Parks Authority Urges Hikers Not To Litter After Garbage Found Along Trail

The National Parks Authority is always happy that Antiguans and Barbudans can make use of trails and facilities within the Nelsons Dockyard National Park but events of this past weekend are causing management grave concern.

The hiking trails, especially the one that leads to the Pillars of Hercules, have seen increased use by the public during these troubling times, last weekend included. We are encouraged by the number of visitors who want to experience the Park and participate in recreational, exercise and wellness activities.

The Authority however wishes to advise that the trails are not designated picnic areas and is pleading with hikers to be more considerate when enjoying these natural areas.

After last weekends’ excursions, piles of garbage to include cardboard lunch boxes, water bottles, plastic bags, had to be collected off the trail and in the area close to Mermaid Gardens by caring members of the English Harbour community and NPA employees.

Park management is also very concerned that the numbers on the trail may be at variance with the social distancing protocols introduced by the government to prevent any further spread of Covid-19. The NPA, as it considers measures in response to this development, is asking members of the public to be mindful and so guided.

The National Parks Authority takes special pride in the trails and owes a lot to the Tot Club, which is to be credited for providing enthusiastic support in cutting and caring for these unique pathways to some of the best scenery and attractions to be found in the world.

Hikers are also reminded that they use the trails at their own risk and are therefore encouraged to prepare accordingly. We recommend that all hikers wear closed toed shoes, carry extra water, and have a fully charged phone in case of emergencies.

It is also wise for groups to have emergency and contingency plans in place in the event of incidents.

Hikers are further reminded that it is against regulations to remove plants, take artifacts, and damage the historical ruins in the Park.
