The annual Grades Two and Four National Assessments administered by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology will be held next week.
Education officials have signaled their readiness for the evaluations that will be conducted on Monday and Tuesday (8-29 May) involving students from public and private primary institutions.
Education Officer, Measurement and Evaluation, Ineta Francis explains the assessments are not pass and fail exercises but are rather diagnostic in nature.
“They are intended to give the officers (Language Arts and Mathematics) an idea of the literacy and numeracy levels of our students,” she noted.
“When the results are analysed, we look at how we can strengthen weak areas. The aim is to ensure that by the time the students reach the exit point, which is Grade Six, a lot of those weaknesses will be remedied,” Ms. Francis stated.
The education officer revealed that in the past, statistics have shown students at the Grade Two level do well in mathematics, while those in Grade Four experience challenges in both subject areas. However, Education Officer Ineta Francis was quick to add that the performances of students vary on an annual basis and teachers are monitored to ensure every aspect of the curriculum is covered in the interest of students.
A total of 1,408 students are registered for the Grade Two National Assessment on Monday, while 1,476 students of Grade Four level will be assessed on Tuesday.
