Musical Family With Antiguan Roots Named Cultural Ambassadors

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced the Kanneh-Mason family as the island’s newest cultural ambassadors.

Prime Minister Browne made the statement before a packed audience at the Pentecostal House of Restoration where the family was scheduled to perform with the Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony’s production of Playing to Inspire 3 last Saturday.

“We are extremely proud of them even though they are born in England, they continue to promote the fact that they are Antiguans, as a result, my government has decided to make them cultural ambassadors of Antigua and Barbuda. Each of them would be given an Antigua and Barbuda diplomatic passport”.

The family, in particular, the son Kanneh-Mason rose to international stardom when he won the 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year award.

Despite their international recognition, the family continues to contributions to the art form of the island.


The government has also committed to financially support Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra (ABYSO) according to Prime Minister Browne.

“The government of Antigua and Barbuda will make available on an annual basis a subvention in the amount of fifty thousand dollars to support this concert.”

The orchestra will provide an avenue for young people with an interest in music to hone their talents and benefit holistically from the proven virtues of exposure to music education. According ABYSO mission, they  to seek give an opportunity, “to the Young people, regardless of their socio-economic background, who demonstrate a passion for and interest in developing as musicians.”

  1. After the Royal wedding I read half a dozen stories and a tv expose about young Sheku Mason, not one mentioned his Antiguans roots.

    • If he were a criminal you would have read about it. Believe you me. That is the way of the world. They will claim them their own when they do wonderful things and the minute they do something bad they disown them.

  3. Well done Kanneh-Mason kids all 7 of them. A truly gifted, remarkable, musical siblings. Definitely classical in origin+ other musicals forms. A highly educated group. Antiguan grand father & mother, Arnold & Enid Mason formerly Enid Prince. Congratulations on being named Cultural Ambassadors of Antigua. An honor well deserved.
