MP Samantha Marshall Sets The Record Straight On Cades Bay Lands

2

At a political meeting organised by the United Progressive Party (UPP) on the night of Thursday, 31 March 2022, Mr Cortwright Marshall made false and vexatious claims pertaining to the cost per square foot of lands being made available for sale at Cades Bay.

These lands are being developed and managed by National Housing Development Co. Ltd. as part of the Government’s effort to provide more affordable opportunities for persons to acquire their own land and homes. Notably, these lands are available to persons residing in the constituency of St Mary’s South for $6.00 per square foot, which includes the installation of infrastructure and not $9.00 per square foot, as falsely purported by Cortwright Marshall.

The landownership and homeownership initiative is the most significant development in the Urlings and Cades Bay communities since the 1980s, when the first phase was initiated by the then Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) representative Hugh C. Marshall Sr. OBE. Moreover, from 1994 to 2014, the UPP’s representative, whilst out of office and in office as the Minister responsible, failed to offer any empowerment and ownership opportunities to the residents of the community and constituency.

After decades of gross neglect and very little opportunities made available to the people of St Mary’s South for their advancement, I made it my duty upon being elected to provide constituents with opportunities for further education, capacity building in agriculture, access to affordable lands and housing, coupled with the long-overdue renovations to key community facilities and institutions.

It is most disappointing and unfortunate that Cortwright Marshall, an Attorney-at-Law and a rebound political aspirant, would seek to deliberately mislead persons in the constituency and beyond in a desperate effort to cause confusion and gain cheap political points. Yet, persons within his campaign team have privately enquired and are currently in the process of obtaining lands in Cades Bay at $6.00 per square foot.

Therefore, I encourage persons to seek accurate information at all times from the relevant authorities to make the right informed choice, and the right informed decision.

  1. Very well but how is it that Cades bay lands are only for constituents while you want to give away Barbuda lands to none Barbudan. Similarly the supports the actions of the people of Old road standing up against the outsider your ministry of agriculture was issuing our agriculture lands to. However my view is that all Antiguans should be able to purchase lands anywhere, regardless of where you live. Especially the sons and daughters of the Antiguan slaves. I will even bend backwards and accepting you putting aside a certain percentage for the residence of the area. Don’t tell me that an ambitious, hard working, young person from grays farms or point who want to improve his or her life will not be given the opportunity. I think if someone take this matter to court saying the government is discriminated against them it could be an interested case. Also please do not play politics with government assets madam minister. You stated that members of his campaign team are seeking to obtain lands in the area. These individuals has the right to apply and please make it a first come first serve basis and not you support red so you get priority and blue, yellow and green on the back burner.

  2. The sad thing is the government of the Wicked UPPITES took backs from poor people. The startling thing that liar is from the same village of that vindictive from Agriculture Minister (HB). However, the present Agriculture Minister should ensure those poor people money’s are returned to them. The minister have the amount and record’s of these people. UPPITES are so disgraceful and dishonest.
