In a heartfelt message on World Cancer Day, Hon. Kelvin ‘Shugy’ Simon, a  Member of Parliament in Antigua and Barbuda, shared a personal connection to the cause, having lost his mother to cancer in 2022. His poignant appeal resonates with the global community as he calls for collective action against this devastating disease.

World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, serves as a platform to unite people worldwide in the fight against cancer. This year’s theme, “Together, we challenge those in power,” emphasizes the need for leaders to prioritize and invest in cancer prevention and treatment, bringing about a transformative change in the future of this lethal illness.

Speaking about the importance of solidarity, Hon. Kelvin ‘Shugy’ Simon stated, “I lost my mother to cancer in 2022. Please join me in honoring and remembering everyone affected by this disease. Let us stand together against cancer and take action to change the future of this deadly disease forever.”

The Honorable Member of Parliament stressed the urgency to strengthen information systems to gather quality data for better decision-making in the treatment of cancer. He highlighted the necessity for leaders to address the disparities in access to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, irrespective of socioeconomic status, age, or gender.

“If we work together, we can conquer cancer. We must go the extra mile for a cancer-free Antigua and Barbuda,” Hon. Kelvin ‘Shugy’ Simon passionately declared, urging citizens to join hands in the battle against cancer.

Cancer remains a significant global health challenge, impacting millions of lives each year. World Cancer Day provides an opportunity for individuals, communities, and governments to raise awareness, take action, and work towards a future where cancer is preventable, treatable, and no longer a deadly threat.

As the world unites on World Cancer Day 2024, the call to challenge those in power resonates not only in Antigua and Barbuda but across borders. It is a collective plea for leaders worldwide to prioritize the fight against cancer, allocate resources for research and treatment, and work towards a world where no one has to endure the pain of losing a loved one to this devastating disease.
