My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to Hezekiah Thomas of Bolans. He was bound and brutally beaten in a violent home invasion a few days ago. I just paid him a visit and it pains me to see what he is going through.

He is one of the hardworking elders in our community. According to his family, he suffered severe injuries to his eyes, head and neck.

This unfortunate development is reprehensible and what’s baffling is that it occurred near a busy main road. It appears that criminals are at war with innocent citizens, and the Government has left us to fend for ourselves.

After many years of mismanagement and chaos, the police station in Bolans is still not fully functional and officers are not equipped with the requisite resources to function effectively. There are too many unsolved crimes and the government seems unconcerned about the reality of our nation’s brutal violent crime crisis.

I call on the Minister of National Security to immediately mobilize all stakeholders and let us come together to properly assess the problem and find solutions. Instead of focusing on how much safer Antigua and Barbuda is relative to other countries, let’s get real and deal with the problem.

It’s time for us to move beyond the β€œsweet talk” and instead address the many promises that have been made to upgrade our crime fighting techniques. We need a comprehensive plan to tackle the crime scourge and to restore hope and comfort to our communities. We need to get the input of citizens in real time and answer burning questions from all stakeholders.

The fight against crime must be holistic and include prevention, detection, conviction, and rehabilitation. The government must present a multidisciplinary approach to deal with this violent crime crisis that has overwhelmed our country. I urge the Minister of National Security to address this crisis immediately because there can be no prosperity without safety and security. #brokenpromises#addressthecrimenow

  1. Hear! Hear! Thank You for your insightful words of reason & compassion.
With police not able to carryout their duties how does this government expect a change to crime & violence. The current government is one of apathy and without reason or leadership.
The violence & crime are clearly growing despite misleading and incorrect sentiments from the current government. When will enough be enough. Attacking people in the sanctity and safety of their homes, senior citizens of the community at that. When will this government support the police in an effort to divert crime.
    Enough!

  2. The crime fighting tactic must be based on pragmatic research and not outdated ideology currently being used like not wearing a shorts at police headquarters.

It is time for my recommendation be put in place. It is a matter of national urgency and importance.

  3. This government can’t even furniture the new Bolans police department. The police in Bolans put out a call for help from the community. They have no office equipment, no nothing to do there jobs. Disgraceful …… the list of supplies they need makes me believe all they got from the ABLP was an empty police station.
