Mottley Says No Cabinet Approval Yet For Sale Of Shares

Barbados may not be as eager to sell its LIAT shares as Antigua and Barbuda is to purchase those shares.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley is indicating that her Cabinet is yet to make a decision on the matter.

Her comment follows persistent claims that Bridgetown has agreed to sell all but ten per cent of its 49 per cent shares in LIAT.

Antiguan Prime Minister Gaston Browne said this past weekend that he has reason to believe that Barbados will divest most of its shares.

His Barbados counterpart Mia Mottley would only confirm that the matter is under consideration.

“I give you the assurance and the people of Barbados that when the Cabinet has reviewed and is in a position to be able to do so, that I will speak in the place to which we have become accustomed to speaking, which is the Parliament of Barbados. And I will speak to the people of Barbados, but I am not in the habit of sharing correspondence that I have written to anyone, far less colleague heads, in the press before they have seen it and I don’t think there is anything which would cause me to alter those basic precepts of behaviour that I consider dear. Barbados is committed to LIAT and regional air travel, we may not be committed to LIAT (1974) Ltd and that’s the fundamental difference and there is more than one way to do that which we have to do” she said.

Prime Minister Browne has explained that acquiring some of Barbados’ LIAT shares will protect Antigua and Barbuda’s interests, and ensure that LIAT is not made into a smaller airline because that would hurt the country.

He says obtaining the additional shares is a practical solution to an emerging problem.

  1. SILENT THINKING – PROTECTIONISM

Seemingly, the media announcement by Prime Minister Gaston Browne respecting ‘…protecting the interest of Antigua and Barbuda,’ might also be the ‘…Silent Thinking’ of Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Motley- ‘…Protecting Barbados interests.’

On the field of play, the players shall all know what game they are playing.

For the child’s play game of ‘…Hide and Seek.’ could change to the game ‘…Ringa- Ringa Roses; …Pocket full a posies.’

Then you will not only see and hear, …We all fall down,’ but also ‘LIAT’ fall down.

  2. I hope we were not counting our chickens before they were hatched. I sensed that our government was too quick to come out and make pronouncements before the exact situation with Barbados was confirmed. We could do well will Barbados’ approach to all of this. I believe that though Ms Mottley’s personal opinion would be to sell the shares, she is taking the approach of letting her Cabinet decide. Clearly a more mature and sensible approach to all of this. Our government always seem a little too eager to come out and talk about issues even whilst they are at a sensitive and delicate position.

  3. Isn’t she the Top Dog like our Top Dog??? And no other dog can bark once she has barked???

  4. There is only one person in the Caribbean who thinks he is top dog. Want to guess who that is?
