$200M Eco-Friendly Development Planned for Barbuda

A new $200 million investment project is set to reshape Barbuda’s tourism landscape, focusing on eco-friendly development and sustainability.

The project, led by investor Thomas and a group of international partners, aims to introduce hurricane-resistant structures and environmentally conscious designs while boosting the island’s economy.

Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez confirmed the initiative, stating, “This project is going to be very eco-friendly. They are not using concrete but have introduced a new way of building that is both hurricane-proof and storm-resistant.”

The project is backed by major international investors, with Thomas holding a shareholder stake. Fernandez revealed that the land had already been leased several years ago, paving the way for the next phase of development.

“Thomas already had the land leased, and now he has brought in big investors to move forward with the project,” he said.

While the initiative has secured financial backing, it must still go through regulatory approvals.

“The next step will be engaging with the Environment Department and the Development Control Authority to get everything finalized,” Fernandez stated. The project is expected to begin construction before the end of the year, with completion anticipated within four years.

The development will prioritize sustainability by integrating renewable energy sources and construction techniques designed to minimize environmental impact.

The project’s approach moves away from conventional concrete structures, instead using innovative materials tailored for hurricane resistance.

Beyond its environmental considerations, the project is expected to create employment opportunities for Barbudans.

Fernandez emphasized the economic benefits, stating, “By the end of this year, we expect to see construction activity beginning, and in the next four years, the development will be fully operational, providing jobs and business opportunities for the local community.”

The minister suggested that this project reflects a broader trend of increasing investment interest in Barbuda. He proposed that the government compile a portfolio to highlight ongoing development efforts.

“I think the government should put together a portfolio to showcase some of these major developments in Barbuda so people can see the scale of what’s happening,” he said.

Officials believe the project aligns with Barbuda’s positioning as a high-end, low-impact tourism destination.

Fernandez added, “This is a major investment that will enhance Barbuda’s appeal while ensuring that development remains environmentally responsible.”
